Maxine
Schwahn
Jan 6, 1934 — Sep 26, 2026
Bennington
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Maxine (Thompson) Schwahn. She died on September 26th, 2026. She was 92 years old. She was known to friends and family as Macky. Later her son, Bryan, would give her the nickname Muffin. It stuck and her grandchildren would later call her Grandma Muffin. Cassie's children called her Gma.
Maxine was born on January 6, 1934 in Promise SD. In 3rd grade she started attending school at St Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain SD. She would stay at the school during the 9 month school year and spend the summers at home. There are many stories told of her adventures at the school with her cousins. She could get a letter from her Mom every week and that helped some with being homesick. The family then moved to Timber Lake SD. She graduated from Timber Lake High School. She then went on to the National School of Business in Rapid City.
Romance bloomed at a dance in Eagle Butte. Ed Schwahn was back home after serving in the Army and was introduced to Maxine by her cousin. After dancing Ed asked to drive her home and he did...all the way to Timber Lake. They talked in his car till 4 in the morning. They dated for three years and were married on November 22, 1958 at All Saints Catholic Church. She started working at the bank as a teller and Ed started his own radio and electrical business, Schwahn Radio and Electric. They later moved to Spearfish SD. Ed continued to work as an electrical contractor and Macky worked at Pioneer Bank and Trust. Ed became ill and disabled in 2007 which required them to move to Omaha NE to be better assisted in his care. Ed preceded Macky in death with his passing on June 6th, 2010. Macky then stayed in Omaha until her death.
Macky and Ed shared a deep faith in God and were blessed with 4 children. Cassie is married to Phil Baker and they have two children, Adam and Amanda. Bryan is married to Tina and they have a blended family of six girls, Haley, Stephanie, Eden, Samantha, Paige, and Abbey. They have given Macky four great grandchildren with another on the way. CJ is married to Lora and they have two children, Rori and Cody. They have given Macky two great grandsons. Russ is married to Lisa and have four children, Emily, Keithen, Dewey, and Jhett. They have given Macky three greatgrandchildren with one more on the way.
Macky was full of love for all of her family. She made sure all her nieces and nephews were sent Birthday cards. It meant a lot to her to keep in touch and make sure they knew how much she loved them. It saddened her when she could no longer do that due to her loss of eyesight from macular degeneration. She could not spoil her grandkids enough. They often received care packages of cookies, party mix, and scotch-a-roos and homemade Christmas gifts such as Christmas tree skirts, baby quilts, baby dolls and pillowcases. She traveled as much as she could to see her grandchildren's sporting events and did not miss a wedding. She loved playing cards with her grandchildren. Very competitive games of Kings in the Corner and Plump were played in the evenings with much laughter.
Macky also made deep friendships with her coworkers at the bank and at her church. Her loving appreciation of the staff at Good Samaritan touched many of them and they too called her Grandma Muffin. She had a gift for making anyone and everyone feel loved.
Macky is survived by three sisters, Deatta, Gloria and Kay, and one brother, Gary. She is preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy, and two brothers, Wayne and Daryl.
