Maxine Meeker, 87 of Deadwood passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Bella Vista Golden Living Center in Rapid City.
Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, SD with Pastor Bruce Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Deadwood. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to benefit the Lawrence/Meade County Teen Court Scholarship Fund.
Maxine was born on March 4, 1923 in Jerauld County, Wessington Springs, SD, the daughter of Ernest and Estella (Perkins) King. She grew up and attended school there. She married Less Meeker on November 22, 1941 in Wessington Springs. After their marriage, they worked on farms near Ree Heights and Miller, SD before buying their farm in Hand County in 1947. They sold their farm and moved to Highmore in 1952, moved to Miller in 1953 to Deadwood in 1956. Four children were born to this union-Donna, Ron, Marva and Marlene.
Maxine was an active member of the Women of the Moose, Lead Chapter #818, a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Deadwood and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Deadwood. Maxine worked at the Shoe Box, F & M Bootery and J.C. Penney in Deadwood, retiring from the J.C. Penney's Store in 1985.
Survivors include her children; Donna Vasconi, of Las Vegas, NV, Ron (Sandy) Meeker, of Rapid City, of Rapid City, SD, Marva (Raymond) Sargent, of Las Vegas, NV and Marlene (Gary) Todd, of Deadwood; 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Less; parents; brothers Dwight, Earl, Vernon, and Willis; sisters Thelma, Velva, Neva, infant sister, Anna; and Son-in-law Bill Vasconi.
Arrangements are under the care of Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel of Lead, SD.
