Obituary

Max Raub Johnson, teacher, baker, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away on Saturday, February 16th in Noble, Oklahoma. He was 86. Max was born on June 23, 1921 in Mobridge, South Dakota, the son of the late Lester and Mildred (Raub) Johnson. He was predeceased by his favorite sister Virginia Foster and her husband William Foster, both of Spearfish, South Dakota. He received a BA from Black Hills State Teachers College in Spearfish, South Dakota and a Masters of Education from Chapman College in California.

Max was a veteran of World War II, serving 4 years in the South Pacific as a Sergeant in the Army. He continued his service in the Army Reserves. Max spent many years working in his parent's bakery, Johnson's Bakery, in Spearfish. Max was a volunteer firefighter in Spearfish and assisted with the firefighting efforts of the 1959 Deadwood fire.

Max married Marjorie Dickey in 1952. Max's first teaching job was in Newell, South Dakota. He moved with his family to Apple Valley, California in 1961 to teach Junior High School English and History in the Victor Valley School System.

Max will be remembered for his unfailing devotion to his family, his passion for learning and teaching, his love of baseball, and his famous World's Best cinnamon rolls.

Marjorie Lucile Dickey Johnson, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, musician and golfer passed away on Friday, July 4th in Noble, Oklahoma. She was 84. Marjorie was born on November 6, 1923 in Spearfish, South Dakota. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Margaret (Cooper) Dickey. Marge was predeceased by her sister El'Louise Dickey Eaton Navarez and is survived by her sister June Dickey of Houston, Texas and her brother Bob Dickey of Peach Tree, GA.

Marge received her Bachelors Degree from Columbia University. She received a Master of Arts Degree in music from Cornel University. She was the head of the music departments at schools where she taught in Wisconsin and California.

Marge was an accomplished pianist, passing along her love of the instrument through private lessons. She was the organist for the Christian Science Church in Hesperia, CA. for many years. She was the concert accompanist for the Apple Valley elementary and junior high schools for 20 years. Marge was a baritone in the Victor Valley SPEBSQSA chapter of the Sweet Adelines.

Marge was also an accomplished golfer. She entered and won many ladies golf tournaments in the Victor Valley area. She was club champion at both Silver Lakes and Jess Ranch Country Clubs in Apple Valley, CA. Her long game was consistent and her short game deadly.

Max and Marge are survived by their children, Alan Johnson and his wife Carol of Meriden, Connecticut, Janet Johnson Robertson and her husband Bruce of McLean, Virginia; Steve Johnson and his wife, Paula of Noble, Oklahoma, Scott Johnson and his wife Peggy of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 5 grandchildren, Clint Johnson, Lauren Johnson, Eric Johnson, Amanda Clark and her husband Marvin Clark II, and Jacob Johnson and 2 great grand children, Colton and Logan Clark.

Although Max and Marge lived in California for 44 years, their hearts never left the beauty and serenity of the Black Hills of South Dakota. They made many friends and had many wonderful memories of this beautiful region. Their lasting wish was that they be inurned with their friends and family in Spearfish. Graveside services for Max and Marge will be on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 10 a.m. in the Rose Garden at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish, South Dakota.
