Obituary

Mavis A. Kyllonen, 84 of Spearfish died Friday, June 20, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Mavis Kyllonen was born December 31, 1929, on a farm near Pelto, (near Devils Lake) North Dakota, where her grandparents homesteaded, to John and Lillian (Raketti) Kyllonen. After graduating high school at Augustana Academy, Canton, SD, in 1947, she completed nursing education at Lutheran Deaconess School of Nursing. Minneapolis, MN, in 1953. She worked in the nursing profession in Minneapolis, Portland, and retired after many years at Swedish Hospital in Denver. Having no children of her own, she delighted in her five nephews, great nephew and great nieces.

She developed many health problems and moved to Spearfish six years ago to be near her sister Karen and nephew, Rob. She resided at Edgewood Vista where she was marveled for her determination to participate despite her many challenges. "She just keeps going," they said, "she's the Energizer Bunny." She was God's faithful servant in the congregation at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Denver, for many years and at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish.

An avid fan of the Rockies and Broncos, she wouldn't miss watching a game if at all possible and was knowledgeable on players and statistics. Appropriately, the Rockies were on TV her last evening on earth.

She is survived by her sister, Karen Holzworth Swanhorst (Eldon); nephews, Scott Evans, Mike Evans (Kyiah), Rob Evans (Lorissa), Mark Holzworth and John Holzworth; great-nephew, Matthew Clingman, great-nieces, Jamie Evans and Addison Holzworth; and brother-in-law Billy (Dixie) Evans. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Eileen Evans; brother, John Kyllonen; brother-in-law, Richard Holzworth; niece, Jill Evans and great-niece, Taya Oshanick.

Her indomitable spirit will be missed by her family, friends at church, dialysis, and Edgewood Vista and many others.

Memorial service will be at 10:00 am on July 2, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish.

Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
