Obituary

Matthew Sorensen Driskill, 49 of Hulett, WY died on August 3, 2011, at his beloved KOA Campground in the shadow of Devils Tower.

Full military services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Sunday, August 14, 2011, at the Greater Hulett Community Center, with lunch to follow. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

He was born December 31, 1961, in Belle Fourche, SD to Jesse T. and Ellen (Horton) Driskill. Matt attended school in Belle Fourche through 4th grade when his family moved to the Campstool Ranch at Devils Tower in 1972 and he transferred to Hulett School. He graduated from high school at the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) in Roswell, NM. Matt attended Sheridan College and served ten years active duty in the Air Force and retired from the Wyoming Air National Guard. He served in the Persian Gulf War and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant.

In 1985, Matt married Brenda Clark and to this union, a daughter, Cheney, was born.

Matt returned to Devils Tower in 1996 and began working with his mother at the Devils Tower KOA. On February 14, 1999, he married the love of his life, Kathi Johnson, and together they operated the Devils Tower KOA for the past 12 years. The KOA recently received their 30-year award, which Matt was extremely proud of. In 2004, Matt and Kathi were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Jessee Loring, whom he loved very much.

Matt enjoyed roping, hunting, golfing and an occasional poker game. He was well known for his cooking and catering skills. Matt was a member of the American Legion Roy Montgomery Post 80, Half Fast Roping Club, Devils Tower Tourism Association, Crook County Promotion Board and the Wyoming Tourism Board.

Matt is survived by his wife Kathi; and daughters Cheney of Edgemont and Jessee of Hulett; grandson Dominick; father Jesse T. Driskill; grandfather Pete Smith of Sand Creek, WY; Aunt Dorothy (Rondy) Dike of Bowen Island, Canada; brothers Jesse K. "Tobe" (Peggy) Driskill of Rio Rico, AZ, William Ogden (Zannie) Driskill of Devils Tower; in-laws Don (Terri) Johnson of Hulett; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, JR (Bobbi) Butler of Hulett, nieces and nephews Andrea, Katerie and Lincoln Driskill of Devils Tower, and Austin, Dawson and Dalton Butler of Hulett, as well as numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen and his grandparents.

Matt was a wonderful husband, father and friend who will be greatly missed. Following cremation, the family will place Matt's ashes near his home at Devils Tower. A memorial has been established for his daughter Jessee's college fund.
