Obituary

MaryAnn Therese Woitas, 83, of Spearfish, SD died July 14, 2026 in Spearfish.

She was born May 29, 1943 to Jeremiah and Mary (Wehner) McGoff in Blue Earth MN. She grew up on the family farm near Guckeen, MN, attended District 29 country school, then graduated from Blue Earth High School in 1961. She earned an LPN license in 1962 and worked as a nurse through 1966 in Austin, MN.

MaryAnn met Gregory Woitas at an Interlaken Ballroom dance in Fairmont, MN in 1965. They were married November 26, 1966. They resided on the Woitas dairy farm, soon adding children Jean and Dale. In 1974 they moved to the Black Hills, where Paul was born.

After honing her homemaking skills, she re-entered the workforce as fabric store clerk, tailor, private home health aide, and hospital aide. Her passions included attending Bible studies, bowling, playing cards, sewing garments and quilting. She also spent time building community as an 4-H leader, fair judge, Lawrence County Extension club, and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she chaired the funeral food committee for many years.

Preceding MaryAnn in death were her parents, sister Margaret O’Rourke and an infant brother.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years Gregory; her sister Rita Jose, Mankato MN; children Jean (Brent) Gorman, Gillette WY, Dale Woitas, Fairbanks, AK, and Paul Woitas, Albuquerque, NM; granddaughters Hannah (Layne) Eike, Erin (Bevan) Beck, and Sarah Gorman, six great-grandchildren (all of Gillette WY); her sister Rita Jose, Mankato MN; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Minnesota Lake, Minnesota. Rosary will begin at 9:00 AM with a visitation to follow from 9:30-11:00 AM.
