Obituary

Mary "Lorraine" Ondriezek, 94, of Deadwood, SD passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Affectionately known also as Sonny.

Lorraine was born to Louie & Blanche (Tobin) Sonnenburg on October 15, 1917 at Estelline, SD. Lorraine graduated Estelline High School in 1935and graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, Sioux City, Iowa in 1938. She was employed at Porath Hospital, Storm Lake, Iowa and Estelline Community Hospital prior to joining the Army Nurse Corps in 1944. She served with the 241st General Hospital at Camp Sissonne, France with a unit of the 82nd Airborne stationed there. She received a battle star for the Battle of the Rhineland, and received her honorable discharge as a First Lieutenant in February of 1946. She then was a supervisor at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, MN for four years.

She was married to Dr. Paul Wasner on January 6, 1952 in Brookings, SD. To this union was born Paula Ann in 1955, she died 3 days later, and Lori Paulette was born Oct. 5, 1957. She later married Don Ondriezek on December 13, 1958 in Deadwood, SD.

In Deadwood, she was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and Altar Society, an active member of Beta Sigma Phi since 1952; Northern Hills Hospital Auxiliary; two Bridge Clubs; Friends of the Library and Museum; chairman of American Society for Cancer for 31 years; served on County and City Election Boards; "Bag Ladies"; City Chamber of Commerce and an Association member of the Chamber.

Survivors include her husband, Don, of Deadwood; daughters, Lori Wasner and her husband Mike Grindel, of Richland, WA and Judy (Dale) Hogen, of Spearfish; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Stephen Grindel, Dale and Nick Hogen, Sonya Snowden and Melody Fenske; sister, Nancy Roth and several nephews and a niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Dr. Wasner; daughter, Paula Ann; and brother, Don Sonnenburg and his wife, Questa.

Vigil Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood, with visitation to be held one hour prior. Mass of Christian Burial will be at10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012 with Father Kerry Prendiville as Celebrant. Burial will follow with military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established to benefit the Fort Meade VA Hospice Unit.
