On July 26, 2013, Mary Louise (Vidal) Neighbours, slipped her earthly bonds and passed peacefully into the next world while asleep at her home in Spearfish, South Dakota. Mary was born in Los Angeles, California on July 23, 1916. She attended school there and in Riverside, California.
After graduating from Riverside High School, she worked as a private secretary and bookkeeper in Riverside. It was there that she met the love of her life, a young army officer, Al Neighbours. They were married on August 31, 1940.
Mary did not aspire to have a career outside her home. She, instead, dedicated her life to raising her two children, and providing a warm and loving home for her family. She was active in school and church affairs, and there were always cookies in the cookie jar. Her life revolved around her husband and her children, and later her grandchildren. She was always more than happy to show pictures, and talk about them with anyone she met.
Mary loved to travel, and with her husband in the military she did a lot of it. She was a world traveler, and loved talking of her many travels in Europe and Asia.
Mary came to Spearfish with her husband in 1994, and loved the beauty of the Black Hills. On any given day, she could be seen riding the Prairie Hills Transit about town. She loved to go anywhere, and was ready to go at any time.
Mary made friends everywhere she went about town. With her kind nature and warm smile, all who knew her, loved her. She knew so many people in town, and took great pleasure in having so many friends.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Francis Gardick, her brother Frank, and her husband Al. She is survived by her daughter, Marialee and her son, Al, his wife Judy, her four grandchildren, Brent, Brad, Brian, Brittany, and a great-grandson Dustin.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, August 2, 2013 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Memorials have been established to benefit the Western Hills Humane Society and Hospice of the Northern Hills.
Mary Neighbours will be laid to rest with her husband at the Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date.
Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
