Mary Karlene Farley Muldoon passed away peacefully on August 19. Born in Jamestown, ND on April 11, 1941, to Thomas and Florence Farley, during her school years she especially enjoyed figure skating and competitive debate.
After graduating from Jamestown High School in 1959, she earned an AA degree at Valley City State College. In 1961, she taught 3rd grade in Fertile, Minnesota, and, although she loved teaching, she learned she was better suited to work with older students. When she returned to VCSC to earn a BS degree, she also met her future husband, Dick Muldoon. Completing her degree by the end of 1963, she accepted a one-semester placement teaching English at Wabasso (MN) High School.
On May 30, 1964, she married Dick and they moved to Mt. View, Wyoming, where Mary taught English and was the debate team coach. In 1965, they returned to North Dakota where she took a similar job at New Salem High School and her husband taught science courses. During the next three summers, Dick earned his MS degree and they moved to Sterling, Colorado. While Dick worked at Northeastern Junior College, Mary spent the first year as a substitute teacher and then took a full-time position teaching English at Sterling High School.
In the fall of 1971, they moved to Sidney, NE and Mary had three new roles: she became the mother of their two children; she became both a substitute teacher at the high school as well as an adjunct instructor at Western Nebraska Technical College; and she became a graduate student at the University of Northern Colorado. By 1977, she was hired as a full-time instructor at WNCC and had completed her work on her MA degree from UNC. For the next 24 years she taught classes in communications, psychology, and introductions to education and also served on the college's North Central Accreditation Committee.
Following her retirement in 2001, she and her husband moved to Spearfish but for the next decade they spent the winters in Laughlin, NV, and enjoyed traveling. By 2012, they both had increasing health issues --including bouts with cancers -- thus they stayed closer to home.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and by her older brother Dr. Thomas Farley. She is survived by her husband, Richard Muldoon; her two children, Ryan Muldoon, (Kimball, NE) and Molly Muldoon (Omaha); her two grandchildren, Taylor and Thomas Muldoon (Kimball); and numerous nephews and nieces and their families.
Mary's family members are especially appreciative of the compassionate and professional help provided by the Hospice of the Northern Hills. A private graveside service is scheduled for a later date.
Cremation arrangements were under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
