Mary (Zimmerman) McGuigan, 64, of Spearfish, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017 at Rapid City Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving husband and children.
She was born November 18, 1952 in Belle Fourche, SD to Ted and Lydia (Schmidt) Zimmerman. She attended school in Belle Fourche and graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1971. She attended Black Hills State College.
She married Mike McGuigan on June 21, 1975 in Belle Fourche. Since that time they have resided on the McGuigan family farm in Spearfish. They have two children, Curtis and Heather.
Her transition from the city to the farm was very easy and her heritage of farming was definitely not lost on McGuigan Dairy. Milking, bookkeeping, and farming seemed to come naturally to her.
Mary loved doing accounting and bookwork for many businesses including the Dairy. Cheyenne Crossing was truly a passion of hers, especially the thousands who visited every year. She greeted them with a smile. Her motherly instincts always kicked in to all. Food, drink, and friendly meals were always available on the farm. Chicken was a specialty, fried or roasted. Her potato salad was famous for miles around and her caramel rolls were to die for. Firemen, farmers, family, neighbors, friends, classmates, and co-workers all were welcome at anytime.
Mary served on the Midwest Dairy Association Board and was very active at the local and national levels for many years. Prior to that time, she was part of a grassroots, local group who because of their closeness were highly productive. She was a member of the Spearfish Fire Auxiliary and State Fire Auxiliary.
Mary greatly enjoyed spending time with her husband Mike, daughter, Heather (Ryan) Koerner, son, Curtis McGuigan, her grandsons, Skylar James and Noah "Bug" Koerner. She also enjoyed spending time with extended family and friends traveling. She was always looking forward to the next family event, friend gathering, or a trip, even a Sunday drive.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Lydia Zimmerman and sister, Penny (Zimmerman) Harris. In addition to her husband, children and grandchildren, she is survived by her two sisters, Linda (John) Boyd, Sun Lakes, AZ, Peggy Zimmerman, Washington Court House, OH; brother, Larry (Dyann) Zimmerman, Rapid City, SD; four sisters-in-law, Patty Moe, St. Onge, SD, Donna Lantgen (Bob), Watertown, SD, LeAnn (Lloyd) Vette, Spearfish, SD and Tamara (Corin) Dennison, Minneapolis, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was an avid supporter of Black Hills State University sports; but, her heart was with the women's basketball team. Some had dubbed Mary, Mike and their friends, the "Psychotic Road Warriors" for the women's basketball team.
Memorial visitation will be from 5-7 PM at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel on Friday February 10, 2017. Memorial service will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 11 at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to endow a scholarship for the Black Hills State University women's basketball team, the McGuigan Women's Basketball Scholarship.
