Mary Brady, wife, mother, grandmother, community leader, volunteer and nature-lover, passed away, surrounded by loved ones May 12, 2017 at Dorsett Home in Spearfish. She will be missed and remembered by her six children and spouses, seventeen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren as well as many extended family and friends.
Born an only child to Herman and Elizabeth Retzloff Feb. 24, 1921, in Pringle, SD, her parents raised her with her cousin, Ellen (Kirk) Farrar. Mary graduated from Custer High School and attended Chillicothe Business College in Missouri. Between 1941-1947 she worked in Hot Springs, Pine Ridge, and for the Angostura Project. During that time she met and married Frank R. Brady. They were married 20 years, till Frank's death in 1967.
Mary and Frank moved to Spearfish in 1952 when Frank and his brother, Fred, started Brady Engineering. Raising their six children kept Mary busy. She loved sewing baton twirling uniforms, daughter's formals and wedding dresses. A passionate reader, the daily newspaper was a treat until her eyesight gave out. Never missing any of her children's activities or performance, she kept the stats on their games for her own interest. Mary and Frank instilled their shared love for the outdoors in all their children.
After Frank's passing she ran a trailer court, enjoyed working with the students at Black Hills State University Registrar office and worked for Black Hills Farm Mutual Insurance. Special activities in the Spearfish community included President of the PTA, Altar Society, Den Mother for cub scouts, 4-H leader, Cemetery Committee, leadership at the Spearfish Senior Center, Senior Olympics, Postal Advisory Council and more. The Spirit of Spearfish award was a cherished recognition of her service. Mary considered herself blessed by her family and her community.
Mary is survived by her six children, Marie (Walter) Omdahl, Forrest (Sharon) Brady, April (Wayne) Anderson, Colleen (Steve) Kirk, Lance (Barb) Brady and Bonnie (Dave) Omdahl.
