Obituary

Marvin Dean Wermers of Spearfish, SD, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025.

Born Oct 20th, 1934, in Mitchel, SD to Joseph and Loretta Wermers, Marvin was the eldest brother of 12 siblings. As a child, he was sent to help work on his uncle's farm—where he learned to drive a tractor at the age of only 10 years old.

After graduating from Lead High School in 1951, Marv spent the next 4 years in the United State Navy, where he served aboard the USS Henry Tucker.

Completing his military service, Marv moved back to Lead, SD, took the money he had saved for a college education, and promptly spent it on a brand-new Chevrolet Impala. With college in the rear-view mirror, Marv accepted a job working for the Homestake Mining Company. While living in Lead, Marv soon met his wife-to-be, Kay Harkness. The two were married on June 25th, 1960, and were soon blessed with two daughters, Marva and Rhonda. Marv spent the next 30 years as valued employee and manager at Homestake, where his skill and work ethic saw him promoted to shift boss of the Metallurgical Department.

Marv is survived by his two daughters, Marva Wermers and Rhonda (David) Sulentic, and by his two grandchildren, Logan (Rachel) Sulentic and Kaitlin Sulentic. Marvin's love for his grandchildren earned him the affectionate title of "Papa Marv," a name he wore with pride. Whether it was frequent trips from Spearfish to show his support for Logan and Kaitlin's numerous sports and activities, his tendency to spoil them with loving gifts, or day trips fishing at Iron Creek Lake, Marvin never missed an opportunity to show his grandkids how much he loved them. His passing leaves behind warm memories and a love that follows him into a better place.

Service will be held at 10:00AM Thursday February 6, 2025, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, SD. Burial will follow the service at Black Hills National Cemetery.
