Martha E. Calvert, age 80, passed away August 13, 2023 at her home in Spearfish, South Dakota.  She was a very devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Martha was born on October 1st, 1942 in Deadwood, South Dakota to Fred E. and Hilda L. Bryan of Lead, South Dakota.  She grew up in Lead and graduated from Lead High School in 1960.  After graduation she attended the University of Wyoming then transferred to Black Hills Teachers College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.

She was united in marriage to Clinton A. Calvert on December 28th, 1963 in Lead.

They lived in Spearfish until Martha graduated from Black Hills and then moved to Rapid City where she took her first teaching position.  Martha and Clint's life journey took them to Oregon; Pueblo, Co; Albuquerque, NM; Phoenix, AZ; Angel Fire, NM; and finally back to Spearfish.  Martha taught 1st and 2nd grade for 5 years and then stopped to start her career as a mother (which never ended).  Her first son, Craig D. Calvert, was born in 1969 in Deadwood and her second son, Marc D. Calvert, was born in 1972 in Spearfish.  She and Clint have been members of the Lutheran Church since shortly after being married.

Martha loved the outdoors, especially the Black Hills and the Rocky Mountains. She spent many summer weekends camping with family and friends.  She also enjoyed collecting pine cones and pretty rocks during many of those adventures.  Martha admired art and collected many landscape paintings of the places she found beautiful, from the hills and mountains, to the Pacific Ocean. But, what she loved the most, was just spending time with family and friends whenever possible.

Survivors include her husband Clint of Spearfish; one son Craig and his wife Ona of Edgewood, NM; her sister Mary L. Gillespie of Lakewood, CO; and four granddaughters, Maddie Calvert (Beulah Valley, CO); Leah Calvert & Grace Calvert (Omaha, NE); and Claire Calvert (Edgewood, NM).  Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Fred & Hilda, and her son Marc.

A Celebration of Life Service at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1020 State St., Spearfish, SD 57783 is planned for October 7, 2023 @ 11:00 am.  In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations be made to the Good Shepherd Clinic, 1020 State St., Spearfish, SD 57783.
