Marjorie Mae Pribble Balo was born on March 21, 1920 to Rachael Hendrickson Pribble and Milton Pribble on "My uncle's farm" by Tulare, SD. Her Mother died of influenza in 1924, and her brother Cliff, sister Viola and she were raised by relatives and friends. Marjorie grew up with Uncle Richard, Aunt Iva Tubandt, and her cousin Vera.  She died June 28 ^th at Spearfish Canyon Care Center. She hoped to be 100 years, so we will celebrate that date March 21, 2020.

She lived with Jensens in Aberdeen after High School in Redfield. Then worked at the S.D. Home for the Feeble Minded in Redfield. There, she met and married Kenneth Balo who was the state milk tester for the Home's dairy. They began to farm near White SD in 1940, paying Prudential Mortgage their whole life.

They got a small herd of registered Brown Swiss and started a dairy. We remember Mom working hard on that farm: raising our food, canning, cooking, washing milk machines, feeding chickens, selling eggs and cream, sewing our clothes, (5 pair of new PJs each Christmas). We grew up working-a dairy farm needs all hands.

She had 5 daughters, all unique individuals with lots of Finnish SISU. So each of us has memories of a different Mom, from our unique perspectives. These are things we remember: Work, Be dependable, Get it done, and Find satisfaction in work.

Mom saw to it that we were in 4-H with Brown Swiss Cattle, of course, and church camp at Lake Poinsett, and family reunions at our house. We had over 70 first cousins. On holidays, our house was wall to wall in preschoolers and elementary children—all cousins. She was not a socialite, but was willing to help others including a family of 4 Latvian adults who were placed with us by Lutheran Refugee Placement Service.

In the early 60s, she went to NSC in Aberdeen to complete her degree in elementary education. She also took classes at General Beadle. She taught at Afton district rural school, Astoria, Duebrook and Bruce.

In 1978, Kenneth's failing health led to the sale of the Brown Swiss and a move to Arizona where Marjorie taught at Teec Nos Pos Day School near Four Corners. Later, they worked at Grand Canyon and finally settled in Prescott Valley, a small development of about 2000 people. Mom enjoyed being active in Lioness , Chamber of Commerce and AARP organizations. She was a life long member of the Methodist church and active in WSCS. She bought a Quilt Shop and began to make more and more quilts.

In 2009, she and Alietha moved to Spearfish to be near family.

Survivors are half brother Les Pribble, Spearfish, daughters Mary Hayenga (Cal) Spearfish, Ruth Wentzy (Al), the Villages, FL; Betty Hults (Ray), Roland, IA, Alietha Balo, Spearfish, Beverly Erickson (Dave), Pelican Rapids, MN, 10 grand children , 19 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces nephews and their families as well as friends. Not to omit the nurses, CNAs and staff and her friends at (Dorsett) Spearfish Canyon Care who have been her family for 4 years.

Preceeding her in death: Husband Kenneth Balo, Sister Viola Anderson, Brother Clif Giffen, Half- sisters Marilyn Fitzgerald and Harriet Hart, Grandson Grant Hayenga.

Memorial Service were held at Spearfish United Methodist Church on Tuesday July 2 at 3 PM. Rev. Scott McKirdy officiating and Emma Wilsey, pianist. Ashes will be placed at the farm at White at a later date. Memorials to Spearfish United Methodist Church or your favorite memorial.

Cremation arrangements were under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Isburg Crematory of Spearfish.
