Marilyn Joy (Samuelson) Sumners was born July 2, 1945 in Murdo, SD, and passed away October 18, 2008, in Spearfish at home.
Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m until 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish, with funeral services beginning at 1:30 p.m., Pastor Dar Berkenpas and Pastor Larry Kellner will officiate and burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
Marilyn was born to Fred and Norma Samuelson and raised in the White River community, graduating from high school in 1963. She was married to Floyd (Johnny) Sumners on June 5, 1963. To this union two sons were born: Travis and Jason.
Marilyn graduated from BHTC with a teaching degree and taught in Belle Fourche for 4 years. Johnny & Marilyn then purchased the Texaco Station in Spearfish in the early 70's and ran the station until selling it in 1986. During this time they also started Johnny's Towing & Snow Removal, which they operated together until selling in 2004. In 1986 she went to work for Queen City Motors as their bookkeeper until leaving in 1996 to work with her son, Travis, as a bookkeeper for his business.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Floyd "Johnny" of Spearfish, SD; her sons, Travis (Trish) of Sacramento, CA and Jason (Angel) of Spearfish, SD; one brother, Mark Samuelson of Rapid City, SD and one sister, Karla Noland of Ada, Oklahoma; 4 grandchildren: Cameron of California, Amy, Matthew and Anthony of Spearfish. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Mary Samuelson-Ring of North Bend, NE; two uncles, Frank Perry of Fort Meade, SD, Robert Perry of Spearfish and one aunt, Lynnette Fredericksen of Pierre; and two nieces and five nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents (Fred & Norma Samuelson), one brother John "Freddie" Samuelson.
