Obituary

Marian Estella Phelps passed away peacefully at Monument Health Hospital in Spearfish, SD, on February 10, 2024, at 88 years of age. She was born near Chatfield, MN, on May 26, 1935, the eldest daughter of Elmer and Edna Borgen. She graduated from Chatfield High School in 1953 and married Gerald Donald Rockvam on July 10, 1955.

Marian and Gerald had four children: Loni, Perry, Brett, and Jan. Their family lived in Chatfield, St. Paul, Elmore, Walker, and Dassel, MN. In 1977, they relocated to Custer, SD, eventually moving to Hot Springs, SD.

Marian worked various jobs throughout her life: nurses aid at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN, (now part of the Mayo Clinic), store owner and manager of Loper's Variety Store in Dassel, manager of the Flintstones Park gift shop in Custer, an aid at Custer State Hospital, and lastly, at the VA Hospital dietary department in Hot Springs, SD, where she retired in 1999. After Gerald's passing in 1995, Marian was united in marriage to Sidney Phelps of Hot Springs, SD, on January 10, 1999.

Marian loved shoes, purses, and jewelry. Her favorite pastimes were visiting family, traveling, shopping, enjoying the slot machines in Deadwood, and most of all, listening to her beloved Sid when he performed with The Black Hills Jazz Band.

She is survived by Loni Johnson (Paul), Rockford, MN; Perry Rockvam (Lynnette), Cheyenne, WY; Brett Rockvam (Tammy), Sioux Falls, SD; Jan Pulkrabek (Merritt), Browerville, MN. Grandchildren Michael Johnson, Mark Johnson (Jenn), Laura Johnson, Josh Rockvam, Katie Gray (Todd), Lindsay Kirkbride (Taylor), Matthew Pulkrabek, Abram Pulkrabek (Julia), Eli Pulkrabek (Kaitlyn). Great-grandchildren Adoniram, Annabelle and Adelynn Johnson, Brooks Gray, Myles, and Mason Kirkbride, and Alayna Pulkrabek. Step-children Susan Sutton (EG), Anchorage, AK; Tami Phelps (Kerry), Anchorage, AK; Jay Phelps, Hot Springs, SD; John Phelps (Barbara), Anchorage, AK, and Jim Phelps (Heather), Sherwood, OR. Step-grandchildren Michael Wise (Sara), Amy Wise, Adrianna and Jade Phelps, and Zane and Jack Phelps. Great-grandchildren Derrik Wise (Kenzi), Hannah, Tanner, and Carter Wise.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Gerald Rockvam; second husband, Sidney Phelps; father, Elmer Borgen; mother, Edna Borgen; brother Howard Borgen.

Services will be held on March 11, 2024, at the Spearfish United Church of Christ. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM, service at 11:00 AM with a lunch to follow. There will be a private interment at the Black Hills National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Spearfish United Church of Christ and the Center of Hope in Sioux Falls, SD.
