Margaret "Peggy" (Wood) Nelson, 98 of Aladdin, WY, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Belle Fourche Health Care Center.
Margaret was born on March 22, 1916 in Whitetail, Lawrence County, SD. She was the eldest of four children born to Matthew and Mabel (Ward) Wood. She attended elementary school in Terry, SD, and graduated from Lead High School in 1934.
Margaret met Alfred R. Nelson at a dance in Beulah, WY. She and Al were married on October 20, 1934 in Sturgis, SD. Al and Peggy raised Hereford cattle on their ranch on Hay Creek near Aladdin. Al and Peggy loved to go hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. They especially enjoyed time at their retreat at the
cabin that Peggy's father built at Dumont near Cheyenne Crossing in the Black Hills. Peggy participated in several local Volksmarch hiking events.
Peggy served on the Board of Directors for the Crook County Museum. She was an active member of the Aladdin Crook County Homemakers, the Crook County Farm Bureau and the Crook County Historical Society. She was an avid genealogist. Peggy authored two historical books. "The Pioneer Families of Crook County" and "A History of Crook County Schools". She was a student and teacher of local history as well as teaching needlework.
Peggy enjoyed crafts and needlework for which she won many honors at the county fairs. Peggy resided in the Black Hills her entire life. Each Christmas Peggy would bake her delicious homemade cookies which she shared with the residents of local care centers and those who were hospitalized.
For many years Peggy provided constant and loving care to her husband, her Mother, Father, her step-mother and her mother-in-law. She was a devoted daughter, wife, daughter-in-law, sister, aunt and friend.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alfred Nelson, her sisters, Mildred Stilwill and Madeline Broadbent and her brother, Melvin Wood. She is survived by nephews, Robert (Maurine) Corbett of Kamloops, BC Canada, John Corbett, Portland, OR, Fred (Connie) Stilwill, Covington, GA, Kenneth (Mary) Wood, Musella, GA, Raymon Broadbent, River Oaks, TX, Tom Broadbent, Jemex Springs, NM, Mike Broadbent, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands,Robert Broadbent, Albuquerque, NM; nieces, LaQuita Allison, Colorado Springs, CO, Edna (Corbett) Mettler, Rapid City, SD, Patricia (Ron) Stilwill Ewick, Port Orchard, WA, Christine Cheryl, Bayard, NM, Gail Wood Clower, Palm Bay, FL; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
Peggy had a nature you could not help loving and a heart that was purer than gold.
Her memory will never grow old or be forgotten. Her life shall be remembered for not what she took, but by what she gave back. She was a friend to all.

Visitation will be from 2:00-5:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, 30, 2014 at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.
