Margaret Lewis, 76, of Spearfish, passed away on January 20, 2016 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Margaret was born on January 9, 1940 in Cheyenne, WY to Gordon and Norma (Stewart) Lewis. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Cheyenne and graduated from high school in 1958. She attended Marymount College in Salina, Kansas from 1958-1962, furthering her education she attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics.
She taught public grade school at Cole Elementary in Cheyenne for two years. Following a calling, she joined the Convent of Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia, KS and served in the religious order for 20 years. During this time she received a Masters Degree in Sociology. While serving as a nun, she taught at Marymount College in Salina, KS. She became a paraplegic in 1976 and overcame many health challenges over the years. She went on to teach at Black Hills State University for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2002 with the title of Emeritus Professor in the College of Arts & Sciences. After retirement she kept active in the community with numerous volunteer projects.
Margaret is survived by her brothers, James (Jane) Lewis of Cheyenne and George (Kathleen) Lewis of Bullhead City, AZ; niece, Krystal Lewis of Cheyenne and nephew, Kirk Lewis of Denver, CO; numerous cousins and a host of friends.
Vigil services will be at 7:30 PM on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 25, 2016 at the church. Inurnment will take place at a Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Cheyenne. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to benefit the Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia.
