Obituary

Mac Johnson passed away on the morning of January 14, 2009 at Rapid City Regional Hospital from a heart attack suffered on Monday, January 5, 2009 at the McLaughlin Sawmill where he had been working for the past 8 years.

Mac was born on October 31, 1945 to Edwin and Jean (Breckenridge) Johnson in Hettinger, North Dakota. His family moved to Spearfish in 1946. Mac was educated in Spearfish (1st - Junior High) and attended Cheyenne River Academy in Harvey, ND and Plainview Academy in Redfield, SD graduating in 1964. He attended Union College in Lincoln, NE and Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD. Mac also drove school bus for Leo Erhart while attending BHSU.

Mac married Susan Miller of Spearfish on January 5, 1969. They farmed for a short time between Belle Fourche and Spearfish and then moved to Gregory, SD owning School Transportation and Transport Service for many years. Returning to Belle in 1984 he continued trucking, raising sheep and farming with his family on the Hat Ranch on Redwater from 1992-1999.

Mac had a love for flowers, work, poetry, music, work, hugs, books, driving tractors, coffee with friends, work, camping with his brother, an ice cold beer on a hot summer day, the weather channel, and did we mention work. His passion for his children and grandchildren and in fact all children cannot be put into words. He was a son, brother, husband, great dad, grandpa and friend.

Mac is survived by his wife Susan of 40 years, daughter Jennifer (Jeremy Henwood) Johnson, sons Jamie (Megan) Johnson, and Justin Johnson all of Spearfish, Joshua Johnson of Rapid City, nine grandchildren: Tel Johnson, Jordan Johnson, Daulton Johnson, Kelby Torgerson, Tyrell Rosencanz, Kaycee Jo Johnson, Devon Torgerson, Jaxon Rosencranz, Brecken Ridge Johnson and a very special angel, Echo. He is also survived by his parents Edwin and Jean Johnson, mother in law Mrs. Bruce (Lola) Miller all of Spearfish, SD, sisters, Sherri (Dean) Fandrich of Lincoln, NE and Debra (Tim) Herber of Campbellsville, KY and brother Randy Johnson of Spearfish, as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A private family memorial service was held January 18, 2009 at Jamie and Megan's home. Malcolm was cremated and his ashes will be placed at a family location in the Black Hills later this summer.

A memorial is being established for youth sports activities in Spearfish, SD.

A celebration and gathering of family and friends for Mac will be held Sat, January 31, 2009 at the Spearfish Park Pavillion from 2:00pm to 5:30pm.
