Malcom Allen, 88 of Deadwood, passed away on October 1, 2018 at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital.
Mel was a lifelong citizen of Deadwood, born December 10, 1929. After graduating from Deadwood high school in 1947, Mel enlisted in the Navy where he trained in the Seabees from 1947 to 1950. He served his entire Navy duty on the island of Guam as they rebuilt the island from WWII. While in the Seabees he worked in various construction fields, one being that of a lineman. This training he used in civilian life.
August 25th, 1950, Mel married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Jean Shedd. This past August 25 marked 68 years of marriage.
Also in 1950, Mel began working at Homestake Mine in the Foundry. In 1953, Mel began 35 years of employment for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. He first served three years as a linemen and 32 years as an equipment manager. Mel retired in 1989 to spend more time with family, including his two sons, four grandsons, and two great-granddaughters who were the joy of his life.
In private life he was a member of the Lawrence County Rescue Team and he also taught hunter's safety to many young boys and girls from the Black Hills Area. He served on the Adams Museum Board and the Broken Boot Board for several years. He was elected to the Lead/Deadwood Sanitary Board where he served for 20 years. Mel also served on the City of Deadwood planning and zoning commission for many years. He was a member of the Elk's club, Deadwood Masonic Temple, and the St. John's Episcopal Church.
Malcolm is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mabel Allen and his older brother Donald. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, Deadwood; a younger brother, Dale (Marge) Allen, Bend OR; son, David (Toni) Allen, Billings MT; son, Ken (Michelle) Allen, Deadwood; grandson, Jesse (Tessa) Allen, Deadwood; grandson, Nathan (Christine) Allen, Lead; grandson, Garrison Allen, Bozeman, MT; grandson, Logan Allen, Bozeman MT; great-granddaughters, Shea and Maci, Deadwood.
Memorial services will be held Friday, October 5, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. John's Episcopal Church Deadwood with a reception to follow at the Deadwood VFW Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be St John's Episcopal Church in Deadwood.
