Obituary

Madonna Mary Naughton Lewis was born at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, South Dakota on May 30, 1931. On March 13, 2026, Madonna, a good and faithful servant, joined the angels of heaven after 94-years of a well lived life.

The majority of her childhood years were spent with her sisters, Rita and Ann, in the farming communities on the prairies of South Dakota. The sisters formed a lifelong bond of love and friendship.

Madonna attended North Buffalo Rural School in Sully County, boarded at Saint Liborious Parochial School in Polo, South Dakota, and a one room schoolhouse in Washington Township Rural School, Hyde County. In 1949, she graduated from Mount Marty High School in Yankton, South Dakota. In 1949, she completed a six-week course at Black Hills Teacher College, Spearfish, South Dakota. In May of 1953, she graduated from St John’s School of Nursing in Huron, South Dakota. Many patients’ lives were touched by her loving, caring, and empathetic nature.

Madonna married James Leroy Lewis on September 26, 1956, at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller, South Dakota. They entered into 48 years of friendship and enduring love. Happiness and contentment were derived from her family which includes Helen Lewis Aldridge and her husband Jon Aldridge; Michael Lewis and his wife Joanne Evans-Lewis; Jane Lewis and Paul Lewis. She has six adoring grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Madonna was very engaged spiritually her whole life. Her prayer life was extremely rich. Throughout the years, Madonna faithfully served the Catholic Church including thirty years of preparing second graders for their First Communion.

Madonna dedicated her life to small acts of kindness, a prayer, a note, or her cinnamon coffee cake.

She radiated a kindness that made an impression on people that made her unforgettable.

Rosary will be held at 12:30PM before the Mass. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00PM Thursday, March 19, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will follow the mass at 3:00PM at Black Hills National Cemetery.
