Madaline Hudson Custis, 85 of Spearfish, passed away on June 26, 2019 at her home.
Madaline was born on February 13, 1934, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Moreau and Mary (Rumburg) Hudson. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School in 1951. Madaline married Daniel Parke Custis, Jr, a pilot in the Air Force, on July 4, 1959, beginning their life-long adventure. They first moved to Roswell, New Mexico and then were transferred to the Black Hills of South Dakota at Ellsworth AFB, where they fell in love with a little town called Spearfish. They started a family in 1960 and had four children by the year 1966. They moved north to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1967, and then on to Eielson AFB. In 1970, they were stationed at Strategic Air Command Headquarters in Bellevue, Nebraska. When Dan retired from the military, they acquired Star Aviation at the Black Hills Airport in 1974. At that time, she obtained her commercial instrument pilots license and began the daring feat of Wing Walking at one of the yearly airshows.
While helping her husband run a business and raising four kids, she graduated from Black Hills State University in 1979 and obtained her master's degree, along with her daughter Patsy, in 1994.
Madaline contributed to the community in so many ways but most notably as a Chamber President and volunteered for 30+ years. She was also a Matthew Opera House volunteer and was an integral part of the development of the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery. Madaline also ran and operated the Canyonside B&B for 14 years out of her home.
She is survived by her children Danny, Betsy, John Dana (Margie) and Patsy. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Jeremiah, Sarah (Olavo), Mary Kathryn (Sam), Elizabeth (Jacksyn), Daniel J. and William; four great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Daniel P., Gabriel and Liam and sister Katy (Richard) Long. She is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Parke Custis, Jr.in 1995; her parents; and brothers, Bill, Bob, Jim and Jack Hudson.
Her many friends will remember her fondly including Sandy Mattern and the members of the Spearfish Wine Club. Her family and friends will hold her memories, love and compassion forever in their hearts.
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 5:00 PM on Monday, July 1, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish. Vigil will follow at 5:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at the church. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery. Memorials have been established to benefit the BHSU Newman Center, the Mathews Opera House and the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery.
