Lynn Ray Fox, 58 of Spearfish touched the Face of God after a long, brutal but courageous battle with cancer spanning his last 11 years. He passed away on June 24, 2014 at Lead- Deadwood Regional Hospital in the same room he was born in.
Lynn was born on April 8, 1956 to Delmont "Del" and Evelyn Mae (Stoda) Fox in Deadwood. He grew up in Deadwood and graduated from Lead High School and worked as a logger for the saw mill until it burnt down in 1979. He moved to Colorado where he learned the art of cabinetry from some European craftsmen, including a Hungarian who used no nails or screws. He was a master carpenter for Black Hills State University for 15 years where many of his woodworking skills can be seen, leaving a lasting legacy of craftsmanship throughout the campus. He also was a Museum Curator at the Western Museum of Mining in Colorado.
Lynn was truly an outdoorsman. Fishing for walleye at Orman Dam, pike on the Oahe River or simply fishing for perch out of his small boat at Deerfield Lake were among his favorites. Lynn never landed for long and loved to be outdoors hiking, camping, hunting, berry picking, long drives deep into the woods and checking out ghost towns. Lynn was a real history buff and spent his last summer following Custer's Trail throughout the Black Hills.
He enjoyed any wood-working project and in his idle time would make bird feeders and always had a constant supply of seed for all the birds that would grace the backyard feeders. He loved to pan for gold, winning 1st place in the 1985 Colorado Gold Panning Championship. He also enjoyed photographing nature's beauty of sunrises and sunsets. He loved visiting with friends and was known for his quick wit and sense of humor.
He is survived by the love of his life, Laura LaPorte, Spearfish; sons, Garrett Ray Fox, Rapid City, Christopher Lynn Fox, Palmer Lake, CO; granddaughter, Giuliana Holsinger; brother, Neil Fox, Piedmont; sister, Launa (Steve) Mason, Lead and niece, Melissa Mason and nephew, Shawn Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gale Fox.
Memorial services will be at 10:00am on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.
