Lorraine J. King, 90, of Spearfish, passed away unexpectedly at Spearfish Regional Hospital on October 15, 2016.
The third child born to Elmer and Martha Johnson, Lorraine was raised in the country near Gregory, SD. She graduated from Gregory High School and attended college in Jamestown, ND prior to starting her years long teaching career. She married Robert King and together they raised five children. While working and raising a family she attended Black Hills State University where she graduated in 1969. She and Robert moved to the Black Hills area to enjoy life upon retirement.
Lorraine was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Spearfish United Church of Christ. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting and crocheting. There are hundreds of needy children that have enjoyed a warm quilt or knitted hats, thanks to her.
Preceded in death by her parents, Elmer & Martha Johnson; her brothers, Derald and Dean; her husband Robert; and her daughters, Robin Paynter and Kimberly Cook.
She is survived by her siblings, Virgil, Glenice (Brown), Cecil, Robert, Berle and Barbara (Matson); her children James, Kevin and Brooks; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the United Church of Christ in Spearfish. Inurnment will follow Black Hills National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Martha V. Johnson Memorial Book Scholarship, in care of Black Hills State University Foundation, 1200 University St. Spearfish, SD 57799
