Wilys Lorraine Hartman was born on September 9, 1929, to Clyde and Celia (Boerner) Hartman, at their farm home south of Winner, SD. She joined two sisters, Opal and Leota, and one brother, Don.
She was baptized as a child in the Methodist Church. She attended various grade schools in the Winner and Colome area. She graduated from Colome High School in 1947. After attending five weeks of summer school at Southern State Normal School in Springfield, SD, she started a teaching career in one-room school houses in Tripp County for a total of ten years, two of these after she was married and actually teaching four of her own children one of those years.
On December 28, 1952, Lorraine married Donald Kaiser, and the couple farmed for twenty three years south of Colome, where their five children were born and raised. In 1974, they sold the farm and moved into Colome for two years. In the fall of 1976, they bought the Queen's Motel, in Spearfish, which they owned and operated for eighteen years. In 1987, they built the Classic Auto Museum in Spearfish, which they operated for five years along with the motel. Lorraine and Don were awarded the 1990 Spirit of Spearfish Award. They sold both businesses in 1992 and retired. During their retirement, they purchased some rental houses, which Lorraine enjoyed helping to refurbish and oversee.
In March of 2001, Don, her husband of forty-eight years passed away, leaving an empty spot in her heart.
Lorraine was a past president of the Thayer-Waters Legion Auxiliary #146 of Colome, SD; a member of the VFW Axillary, and Legion Auxiliary Post #164, both of Spearfish; and a past secretary of the Spearfish Hospitality Association, in 1986 and 1987.
She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Zion Lutheran Church of Colome, SD in 1955. She is a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Spearfish, which she attended faithfully.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; sisters, Leota (Melvin Butterfield) and Opal (Dale Huddle); brother, Don; husband, Don; and son-in-law, Doug Smith.
Her children, grand children, and great grand children were very important to her life.
She also loved music, especially country and country-gospel. She spent much time doing embroidery work, mostly cross-stitching, and supplied most of her family with pieces of her work. She enjoyed researching and collecting family history data from both sides of the family. She compiled family history books for all current and future family members to enjoy and reference. Her last up-date was completed just weeks before her passing.
Thankful and blessed for having her in our lives are her five children, Dan Kaiser, Spearfish; Dick Kaiser, Austin, TX; Donnelle (Randy) Culver, Spearfish; Donnalee (Rick) Huling; and Doug Kaiser, Spearfish; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren, and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
