Lois Karn, 95 of Spearfish, died July 24, 2015 at Belle Estate Senior Living in Belle Fourche, SD
Lois May Keith Sipila Karn was born January 13, 1920 in Omaha, Nebraska where her parents, Ethel and Jim Keith, were wintering their sheep. Her parents both homesteaded at Chalk Buttes, in Carter County, MT where Lois grew up. She went to a country school there built of vertical logs for her first six years of school. Then she went to Spearfish, SD schools until high school graduation. Lois and her siblings Marjorie, and Cap lived in Spearfish only during the school year. After high school graduation Lois attended Billings Business College.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Burch Harmon at the Spearfish Ford Garage for many years. She lived with the Harmon family on their Spearfish Valley Farm. Their son Bill Harmon and Lois formed a special relationship and he is her honorary son. She then went on to work for Brady Engineering five years.
Lois married George Sipila in 1965 and they lived near Newell, SD on his sheep ranch. Lois enjoyed this life. George died unexpectedly five years later at 51 years of age.
She married Frank Karn in 1981. They enjoyed traveling worldwide to numerous countries for 17 years. They were on a cruise in 1998 when Frank died in Argentina.
Lois enjoyed living in Edgewood Assisted Living in Spearfish the nine years before her death.
Lois was a great bowler, photographer, photo developer, traveler and she loved to dance. Rita and Kizzy were her very special dogs. She raised Suffolk sheep, enjoyed many National Wool Growers Association Conventions, and raised miniature Shetland Ponies. Lois crocheted many beautiful heirlooms for friends and family. Later she liked playing bingo and computer games.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; her parents; sisters, Marjorie Keith Curry and her husband Ralph Curry and Fern Ethel Keith; brother, Kent "Cap" Keith and his wife Jessie Keith and step-niece Joyce Lamphere.
Lois is survived by Bill (Ellen) Harmon and their children; step-daughter, Patricia Doncavage; nieces, Margie (Art) Jacobsen and Marla (Ron) Meyers; nephews, Kim (Sherrie) Curry, Jim (Hyonney) Keith and Jerry (Michelle) Keith; a special great-niece, Michelle (JD) Williams; great nieces, Colleen Mannix, Megan (Bryce) Leonhardt, Kala (Pierre-Yves) Garnier, Lacy Keith, Randy Keith, Mickie (Blaine) Koslofsky, Vicki (James) Wilkinson; great-nephews, Alan (Karen) Jacobsen, Brian (Janet) Meyers, Kevin (Robyn) Jacobsen, Jeff Curry, Jarred Curry, Charlie Keith and 13 great-great nieces and nephews.
She was full of fun, positive and very likable. Lois will be fondly remembered by all her family and friends.
