IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lois Marie
Gibson
July 23, 1942 – June 28, 2025
Lois Marie Gibson, with endless gratitude for her wonderful life, passed away peacefully hand in hand with her children on June 28, 2025, in Spearfish, SD at the age of 82.
She was born in Howard, SD on July 23rd, 1942, the fifth child of Arthur and Milda Raad's nine children.
Raised on the family farm just north of Howard, SD, she attended a one room country schoolhouse, then graduated from Howard High School in 1960. She then attended Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, SD, receiving her RN degree. She was married to Harold "Bud" Gibson on 3/27/65. Nursing was her primary profession where she worked in many facets, from delivering babies, teaching prenatal classes, clinic nurse, ER and surgery. She also had an entrepreneurial spirit and proceeded to open a painting store with her friend Bonnie Ellingsen, Pigment Pals, where she taught and was able to share her love of art. She left her mark, usually in bright colors, wherever she went. Starting a gym with friends featuring the latest workout assist equipment was definitely a change of pace. She was also the owner of a land company. Lois and her husband, Bud Gibson, purchased a Ranch in 1997 near the Wyoming border just outside of Spearfish. Unfortunately, after 32 years of marriage, Bud passed a short time later from ALS. Lois' youngest brother, DeWayne Raad and his family moved onto the ranch where, together they raised cattle, chickens, had Norwegian Fjord horses with restored buggies and sleighs and spectacular vegetable and flower gardens. One Spring planting over 432 petunia plants. After more than a decade of ranching she moved back to town where her focus was to build her last home with the idea it would be the gathering place for friends and family.
Outside of work she still found time to be involved in the community. She was always strong in her faith, taught Sunday School, Confirmation and started Church Summer Camp for Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Her hobbies included painting, quilting, reading, games, traveling and entertaining. Her Norwegian heritage was very important and she painted beautiful, traditional Rosemaling pieces.
However, it was family that was her main priority. She always created memorable birthdays, holidays and brought family together. Coming from a large family, there were always reasons to celebrate.
She is survived by children, Dan Gibson (Cathy) Temecula CA, Laura Scholten (Chad), grandchildren, Cade Scholten, Ian Scholten and great grandson Luke Scholten all of Spearfish SD. Her sisters and brothers, Arlene Eklund of Denver, CO, Elaine (Galen) Behm of DeSmet, Larry (Deborah) Raad of Brant Lake and DeWayne (Jeanice) Raad of Rapid City are still carrying on the Raad traditions along with many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Milda (Eidsness) Raad, sister, Donavieve, and brothers Jerome, Darrell, and Leonard Raad.
A service will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish, SD, on Thursday, July 10th at 10am followed by her burial at the Rose Hill Cemetery. We'll have a gathering afterward at her home at 2314 Bridgestone Street. Attendees are invited to wear bright colors in her honor. Memorials can be sent to Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care and support they provide.
