Lester Seldon Kjos was born January 16th 1911 in Brookings County, SD, to Stein and Elise "Lizzy" Kjos. Lester grew up in Haakon County, north of Philip, SD, on the farm that his family homesteaded in the early 1900's. He attended rural school in Haakon County through the eighth grade. Lester had two sisters and one brother; Thelma Ellingson, Ruth Wortsbaugh and Wayne Kjos, who have all preceded him in death.
Lester served in the United States Army from 1942 through 1945. He served in Italy, Iran and North Africa. Upon his return he began working for Leo Bucholz in 1946. He built dams and worked at several other jobs because during this time period it was very hard to find work. He tended bar at the Dakota Bar and worked for the Farmers Union Cooperative in Philip until his retirement in 1976.
Lester married Muriel Ronning Lobdell in 1967 and they spent many years enjoying traveling and seeing many historic spots throughout the region. They traveled to Hawaii, Mexico and enjoyed visiting places in South Dakota where they were both born and raised. He and Muriel enjoyed bird watching and they always had a pair of binoculars in the car to better observe the wildlife that is so plentiful in South Dakota.
Lester was a loving and attentive husband to Muriel for 40 years.
Survivors include his wife, Muriel Kjos of Spearfish, two step-sons, Bryan (Susan) Lobdell of Columbus, OH and Barry (Gayle) Lobdell of Gillette, WY, 5 grandchildren, Amber (Michael) Bath and Monica Montgomery, Jared Lobdell, Ashley Lobdell and Adam Lobdell. Four great-grandchildren, Blake Lobdell, J'Nai Lobdell, Samantha Montgomery or as Lester always called her "the little live-wire", and Ella Grace Lobdell. He is also survived by one nephew, Jerry (Sharon) Ellingson of Spearfish and one niece, Linda (Fritz) Smith of Sturgis, SD and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
