Leroy "Bob" Heinis, 99, Spearfish, SD
The Lord fulfilled his promise to Leroy "Bob" Heinis on Saturday, June 8, 2013.
He was born February 6, 1914 to Lawrence and Susan (Noethem) Heinis in Remsen, IA. At the age of two weeks, they moved to a farm outside of Marshall, MN. He helped his father farm and later farmed a few acres for himself.
He met Lois Harris, and the couple was married on January 3, 1945 in Marshall, MN. They farmed a few miles northwest of Lynd, MN. In 1956 they quit farming and moved into the town of Marshall, MN.
He worked at a gas station for a few years there and then attended a vocational school for auto mechanics in Des Moines, IA. After completing his schooling he went to work for Ben-Hur Ford in Sioux Falls, SD and the family moved there.
After a few years he bought a service station in Crooks, SD and the family moved there, just outside of Sioux Falls.
After Lois got a job with the Forest Service, they moved to the Black Hills and lived in Spearfish, SD. They bought a house and lived the next nine years there. He worked at the sawmill a few years and then when it closed down; he went to work for the City of Spearfish. He retired at the age of 65, but continued to work part-time for the city sweeping streets until Lois transferred with the Forest Service to Quincy, CA. They lived there for four years and then transferred again to Conroc, TX. When Lois retired they moved back to their home in Spearfish.
He spent his time in these later years caring for his yard as well as some of his neighbors' yards. He thoroughly enjoyed working outdoors.
He loved bowling and they both bowled for many years, starting and ending with the Lucky Strike Lanes in Spearfish. They were on teams in Quincy and Conroe, while they lived there. Bob bowled on a mixed league once a week and both bowled on a senior citizens league for many years. Bob and Lois especially loved their time spent dancing together.
He was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife Lois, five sons; Steven, Ronald, Donald, Douglas and Robert. He has 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
There will be a Rosary Service at 4:30 PM, Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, with visitation to follow from 5-7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 PM, Friday, June 14, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
