Our hearts are broken as we announce the passing of our beloved husband, dad, stepdad, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend, LeRoy E. Cleberg, who passed away at home with his family by his side on July 5, 2026, in Spearfish, South Dakota, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He was born on October 21, 1955, in Redfield, South Dakota, to Clyde Anthony Cleberg and Mertiss Dawn Fitzgerald.
LeRoy grew up in South Dakota, graduated from Faulkton High School in 1973, and formed lifelong friendships with Clyde Harr, Jim Becker, and later Julie Becker. Together, they shared countless laughs, memories, and adventures. After working on the family farm, LeRoy moved to Spearfish in 1978 and began a construction career that spanned nearly 45 years. He worked for Nordstrom Construction, Tom Lien, and later Hills Materials at Centennial Quarry, remaining with the company through its transition to Simon before retiring in October 2025. He was respected for his hard work, dependability, and willingness to help anyone.
Leroy and Patty shared 30 wonderful years together. They were married on March 3, 2000, and through their marriage, LeRoy lovingly embraced Patty's three children as his own. Together, they also welcomed their son, Jonathan Cleberg, completing their family.
LeRoy was known for his kind heart, easy smile, and wonderful sense of humor. He loved telling stories—a gift he inherited from his Uncle Mark, affectionately known as "Marky the Great." He also loved classic cars, wrestling, and proudly displayed the trophies and awards he earned over the years. Above all, LeRoy loved his family. Whether spending time with loved ones, playing with the family pets, or teaching his son Jon to drive out at one of his pits, he created memories that will never be forgotten.
LeRoy is survived by his wife, Patty Cleberg; his son, Jon Cleberg; his stepchildren, Justin Vice (Mika), Rebecca Hardin (Jason), and Michelle "Belle" Vice (Shane); his grandchildren, Beau and Breck Thompson, and Zander Vice; his brothers, Lorin, Larry, and Ladel Cleberg; and many beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Anthony Cleberg and Mertiss Dawn Fitzgerald.
A small memorial service for family and friends will be held at the Rockham Community Center in Rockham, South Dakota at 11:00 AM on Saturday July 11th. The family looks forward to gathering to celebrate LeRoy's life, share stories, and honor the memories he leaves behind. LeRoy will be deeply missed and forever loved. To know him was to know someone truly special—a man who always had a smile, a story, and a helping hand to offer.
