Leonard Wales, 89, of Beulah, WY passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Crook County Memorial Hospital in Sundance.
Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. Friday, April 1, 2011 at Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel of Sundance. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 A. M. on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at the Church of Christ in Sundance. A memorial has been established to the Church of Christ.
Leonard was born on June 23, 1921 to William and Edith (Welch) Wales in Essendon, England. Leonard played cricket as a young child and always enjoyed gardening and carpentry work. At age 14 Leonard went to work at de Havilland Aircraft Factory. He took on an apprenticeship in wood working, and made wooden parts for the Tiger Moth and Mosquito Aircrafts. He joined the British Army in 1943 and was stationed in the English Channel on Sea Forts. The forts were used to defend the English Coast from German attacks. He was discharged from the Army in 1947. Returning to work at de Havilland.
Leonard married Margaret French in Essendon and to this union four children were born; Pam and Jackie in Hatfield, England, Terry and Sue in Rapid City, SD. The family immigrated to America on February 20, 1950. They settled in the Piedmont-Black Hawk area, going into the dairy business with Dick and Vio Courchaine, they then moved to Beulah in 1956 continuing the business until 1973. After the 1972 Rapid City flood, Leonard started moving flood houses to Spearfish and Beulah where he rented them and eventually selling them off in 1998. He returned to his 6 cows, gardening and family.
Survivors include his wife Margaret of Beulah; children Pam Crago of Aladdin, WY, Jackie (David) Engebretson of Sturgis, Terry (Cheryl) Wales of Sundance and Sue (Pete) Seykora of Whitewood; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; and sister Netta (Fred) Freeman of England.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, 3 sisters and son-in-law Jerry Crago.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
