Dr. Leonard Edwards, 79, Spearfish passed away at his home on Feb. 24 with his wife by his side.
Leonard was born July 17th 1933 in Dupree to James "Ed" and Ruth Edwards. Leonard, his parents and sister moved to Iowa when he was two, and at the age of 12 they returned to Dupree. He graduated in 1950 from Dupree High School.
On September 6, 1952 he married his high school sweetheart, Velda Libolt, they were married 59 years. To this union three children were born; Laura, Rodney and Marla.
Leonard served two years in the Army then attended school at Northern State University where he received his bachelor's degree. He went back to Dupree and taught one year of math, history and industrial arts. Finding his calling he went back to Northern State University and earned his master's degree, before going on to the University of Missouri for his doctorate. Leonard taught Industrial Arts at Black Hills State University for five years, when he became the dean of that department and continued his journey for an additional 22 years. Leonard was also a member of the United Church of Christ for 49 years, during this time he served on all of the boards.
Leonard has many hobbies including, bowling, rebuilding vehicles, carpentry, house renovations and most of all spending time with his family. He was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, teacher and friend. He always found positive in everyone he encountered and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Velda, his three children, Laura (Paul) Ausderan, Rodney (Pam), Marla (Lyle) Schwindt; nine grandchildren, Hans, Aaron, Ian (Stephanie) Ausderan, Nick, Latasha, Jessica and Travis Edwards, Jennifer (Mike) Mitsos, Brandon (Toni) Larson; six great-grandchildren, Kyla, Landon and Lance Mitsos, Logan Larson, Alexandria and Maddison Ausderan; and brother, Jim (Sherry) Edwards.
He was led to Heaven by his parents, his sister, Patience Backberg, and two brothers, Wayne and Lloyd Edwards.
Visitation will be 5-7 PM, Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Spearfish United Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the National Jewish Hospital in Denver to further pulmonary research.
