Laverne "Verne" Carroll Cowles , 88, of Spearfish, SD peacefully passed away and was united with our Lord on Monday August 4, 2015 at Rapid City Regional Hospital after a short illness.
Verne was born on March 16, 1927 in the same room and house as his mother, in St. Onge, SD to Ray and LillIe E. (Weisman) Cowles. Verne grew up in Pluma, SD and graduated in 1945 from Lead High School. Upon graduation, Verne enlisted in the US Marine Corps. After serving our country, he worked in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry as a key employee for many years at Tolin Refrigeration in Denver, CO until he retired nearly 30 years ago. After retirement, he worked and was passionate about maintaining and improving the air conditioning and heating systems at Black Hills State University.
Verne had so many friends because of his prayerful, warm, caring and loving personality. Some of his passions were bowling into his 80's, watching baseball and fixing anything that was broken. He served our Lord by helping others in the Black Hills Community up until his death. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Spearfish, SD and was one of the founders of Grace Lutheran Church in Deadwood.
He is survived by his loving wife, Millicent (Mee) Cowles. They met in Deadwood, SD and were married on March 1, 1947 in Billings, MT. He is also survived by his loving sister, Jeannine (Cowles) Jones of Spearfish; three of his four children and their spouses, Christy (Chuck) Adams of Keenesburg, CO; Stevan (Mickey) Cowles of Henderson, NV and Raymond (Linda) Cowles of Thornton, CO. He was also blessed with 32 grand and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Shepherd; sister, Dolores (Comer) Hall and his loving parents, Ray and Lillie Cowles.
Visitation will be from 4-6 PM on Sunday, August 9 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish with a prayer service following at 6 PM. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Monday, August 10 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Spearfish. Burial will follow at the Little Dane Church Cemetery outside of St. Onge, immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Little Dane Church or St Paul Lutheran Church.
