Obituary

Larry Alfred Weiers, 70, died on February 20, 2024.  He was born at St. Joseph's Hospital in Deadwood, SD, April 6, 1953, the son of Alfred C. and Estellean (Leino) Weiers.  Larry graduated from Lead High School in 1971.  He married Ruthie Gayle (Goodnough) Weiers on August 11, 1973.  With their union, they welcomed three children Amanda, Jennifer, and Alex.  Larry loved his children and family very much and loved to make everyone laugh.  The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past August.

Larry worked as an EMT, a police officer for the City of Lead, a crusher operator at the Homestake Mining Company, and spent a short period of time at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle WA.  Larry and Ruthie returned to South Dakota where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1984 from Black Hills State College and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Education the following year.  Larry worked for the Lead Daily Call and was the managing editor of the Black Hills Pioneer for many years.  Larry finished his professional career at Premier Bankcard in Spearfish, retiring in 2008 due to health reasons.

He was a member of the Spearfish Masonic Lodge No. 0018, Naja Shriners and Belle Fourche clown unit; gleefully participating as Zippy the Clown.  Larry was involved in many civic activities and volunteer agencies including Jaycees, Elks, Spearfish Food Pantry, and an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.  He also enjoyed playing guitar and was a member of The Morning After, MarLar Disco, and the JJ and Company bands.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Ruthie, are his daughters Amanda (Rob) Johnson of Spearfish, Jennifer Mittleider of Spearfish, and son Alex (Amy) Weiers of Rapid City; and one sister, Linda Severns of Spearfish. Larry was blessed with 11 grandchildren; Lauren, Jaelyn, Kaylee, Chris, Kallie, Jaxon, Londyn, Liam, Lucas, Arthur, and Lilyana.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred C. Weiers and Estellean Leino Weiers, and brothers-in-law William Severns and Randy Goodnough.

A service of remembrance will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish, SD.  A private interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish, SD. Those who wish to remember Larry in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Naja Shriners.
