Larry Louis Ryan, 85, Spearfish, SD, formerly of Deadwood
Larry Louis Ryan, "Dads," loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, found his way into God's loving arms on Saturday, October 13, 2012.
He was born February, 26, 1927 in Aberdeen, SD to G.H. "Pat" Ryan and Anna (Strand) Ryan. He graduated from Deadwood High School in 1944. He then joined the U.S. Army and served in the Occupation Army in Germany at the end of World War II. He worked for Masek Auto and then Hendrie and Buldolf in Deadwood.
Soon afterwards, he joined Robert Ruth in the forming of Ryan and Ruth NAPA Auto Supply at 27 Deadwood Street in Deadwood. They later opened a NAPA Store in Spearfish. Customers at the Deadwood store would always comment about the horse head above the front door. Larry would always reply that they could go around back and see "the other end." Larry was also a self proclaimed car dealer, even though he never had a license to be one. He is probably "dickering" with God right now over a Cadillac.
He met the love of his life Margaret Ridenour in 1951. They were blessed with three children. Larry was a lover of golf, hunting and fishing. He so loved the outdoors.
Larry was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church, member and Past Exalted Ruler of Deadwood ELKS Lodge 508, Deadwood Masonic Lodge and the Deadwood VFW. Larry was active on the Deadwood Planning and Zoning Committee for 16 years. He was the president of the Deadwood School Board, when the Deadwood and Lead Schools were consolidated in 1971-1972. He was also one of the first Deadwood Trolley drivers.
Larry is survived by his wife of sixty years, Margaret and three children, Jane (Michael) Nemecek, Karen (Lee) Stanley and Kevin Ryan. He is also survived by four grandchildren and five and one-half great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
Visitation for Larry will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Deadwood. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery near Deadwood. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to St. John's Episcopal Church elevator fund.
The family would like to thank the loving staff at Edgewood Vista in Spearfish, David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center, Hospice of the Northern Hills and Fort Meade VA Medical Center, for the care given to Dad.
