Obituary
Larry Ray Ragels, 75 of Spearfish, SD, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at his home with his family by his side. Larry fought a courageous battle with cancer.
Larry was born on December 27, 1941 in Conde, SD to Eldon and Irene (Loken) Ragels. Larry graduated from Conde High School in 1959, and after graduation attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. He married his high school sweetheart, Myrna (Mielke) Ragels in 1962. To this union three children were born, Kelly, Mike, and Michelle. After their marriage Larry and Myrna moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota; Larry began his career at Homestake Mining Company and Myrna worked as a nurse at the local hospital. Larry worked as an underground gold miner for 4 years before moving to the Homestake Timekeeper's Office. During this time he also attended and graduated from Black Hills State College with a degree in both Industrial Arts and Business. After 30 years of working at Homestake, Larry started his second career at Pope & Talbot Sawmill where he worked for 13 years. He retired from the Pope & Talbot in 2004.
Larry liked to hunt and fish and instilled a love of those activities in his children. His true passion, however, was riding motorcycles and his 2016 Honda Goldwing Trike. Together, Larry and Myrna rode many many miles, and had grand adventures and trips to Yellowstone.
Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Myrna, and their three children, Kelly (Tami) Ragels of Spearfish, Mike (Kathy) Ragels of Sioux Falls, and Michelle (Dennis) Schmidt, of Belle Fourche. They also have five grandchildren; Tia, Jair, Kaitlyn, Kaylor and Natalie. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Vigil services will be at 6:00 PM on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with visitation one hour prior. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 4 at the church with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
Memorials have been established to benefit Hospice of the
Northern Hills and the new Newman Center construction fund.
