Beloved wife, mother, sister, grandma, aunt and friend, LaNelle Hudson, 82, of Lead passed from this life peacefully on December 20th at the Belle Fourche Health Care Facility surrounded by her loving family. She was a true warrior who battled cancer for many years. Now free of this world's limitations and struggles, she has joined her husband Dick in heaven.
LaNelle was born on November 17, 1932 to Ethel and Dominic Matrisciano in Maysville, MO. She grew up on a homestead in the Sand Hills of Nebraska with eight siblings. LaNelle met the love of her life, Dick, after he transferred to Bingham to attend high school. They went to the movie on their first date and the rest is a one of a kind love story. They married October 7, 1952 and their bond of love spanned 62 years. Their commitment and devotion to each another was an inspiration to everyone. They had a forever kind of love that did not waiver in good times or bad. With honor, pride and a lot of hard work, they raised four wonderful children. Her grandchildren and great-grand children also knew her tremendous love for them.
LaNelle and Dick lived and worked in Nebraska for the first few years of their marriage, but they had always loved the Black Hills. In the early 60's they pulled up their Nebraska stakes and moved to Central City, SD. LaNelle worked for many businesses during her career and she really enjoyed working with the public. She was a bartender and hostess for Turgeons' and then Dave's Supper Club for many years. Her co-workers said she taught them to respect people and they would always come back. From there she went to work for Thompsons Drugstore, then to Shedd's Jeweler's and finally the Hickoks House. She was dependable, reliable, honest, and so much fun to be around. No matter what the job, she gave it her all; she was one of those rare individuals who really loved to work. She belonged to the First Baptist Church of the Northern Hills and the VFW Ladies Auxillary.
Her home life was just as incredible. Every Saturday we cleaned the house whether it needed it or not. She made our home inviting and comfortable to all who knew us. There were not many weekends when there weren't a couple extras at the dinner table; partly because she was an awesome cook. Her cinnamon rolls and chicken and noodles were famous! Christmas was her favorite holiday because the tree was decorated with her cherished crystal ornaments given to her over the years by her children. Every corner of the room was decorated by gifts from special friends or family. Every year we would put a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle together while munching on her divinity or butter crunch.
Lisa had unwavering devotion to mom. She was at the nursing home nearly every day making sure mom was kissed every morning and every night. A constant comfort in a difficult journey.
Mom hated her face wet, but she wanted to learn how to swim so Lori taught her. She loved to cut her hair and paint her nails fire engine red.
Roger's fondest memories are of the family camping and fishing trips. We never went to bed dirty. Mom would have a stand on the picnic table and washed down with lukewarm water and we would run to the sleeping bags and shiver until we would get warm.
Jeane always thought mom should appreciate the various reptiles she found on her journeys as much as she did. Mom didn't share the same enthusiasm as her daughter. Especially when she brought it into the bathroom as she was bathing. Screams could be heard throughout Maitland valley.
She loved to read Nora Roberts and Debbie Macomber novels and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She never missed a night of devotions. She used to read the Bible out loud to her grandchildren and describe what heaven was to be like. There is no doubt she is basking in all of its glory now.
Some of her favorite things are black licorice, double mint gum, red fingernail polish, Oil of Olay lotion, boston burnt peanuts candy and Taco Johns super potato ole's on Tuesdays, crossword puzzles, fireworks, the changing of the seasons, camping and fishing trips and walking in the woods. But most of all she loved being anywhere Dad was.
LaNelle will be incredibly missed by her children, Jeane (John) Hull and son, Chuck; Roger (RoAnne) Hudson and children, Amy, Richard, Robert and Ryan; Lisa (Jack) Ward and children, Bailee and Makenna; Lori (Joe) Fortner and children, Spencer, Kaitlin and Karli; great grandchildren, Lexi, Saylah, Crew, Palmer, Allison, Emily, Micah, Carter, Daniel, and Johnathan as well as her brothers, Bob and Clint and her sister, Kate along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding her on her journey to heaven were her husband Dick, mother and father, Ethel and Dominic Matrisciano, her sisters, Ann and Dorothy and brothers, Jake, Cliff and Lloyd.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Belle Fourche Health Care Center and Hospice of the Northern Hills. Your love, compassion and guidance in this final chapter of Mom's life have been so comforting and we thank you very much.
