Our beloved brother, Kevin Sullivan, 53 of Spearfish, passed away on July 23, 2016 after a short battle with cancer.
He was born in Durham, NC on April 30, 1963 to John and Helen Sullivan. He lived in NC until he was three years old while his father was getting his Ph.D and teaching at Duke University. The family moved to Virginia, where Kevin spent his formative years. Kevin grew up playing baseball and basketball and it soon became obvious that with his height, he was destined to be a basketball player. When he was in his teens, his family moved to Hawaii where he continued to play sports and grew to 6'7". Kevin was a math whiz, able to solve complex calculations in his head instantly. He enjoyed music and baseball stats, which he memorized. When it was time for college, Kevin was offered a scholarship to play basketball in Montana. Kevin made his way to the Black Hills of South Dakota, where he worked in the gaming industry in Deadwood for 26 years. There he met and married Ann Turbiville and together they had a son, Quinn who is now 14 years old. Quinn was the light of Kevin's life and his most enduring legacy.
Kevin worked in casinos in Deadwood and most would remember him from the Gold Dust, where he was the dealer everyone wanted to beat because of his competitive nature and dry sense of humor. Anyone who ever played against Kevin, surely has a story to tell. He was always the "go to guy" when anyone up and down Main Street Deadwood had a sports question, as he could give dates and years to almost any question. His knowledge and wit will be missed by his numerous coworkers and friends.
Kevin is survived by his son, Quinn; sister, Mary and her husband Mike; his brother, Mike and his wife Dianne; and eight nieces and nephews, Derek, Brian, Jennifer, Luke, Blake, Jack, Riley, and Maggie; and his former wife, Ann Sullivan.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 PM on August 22, 2016 at the Elks Lodge #508, 696 Main Street, Deadwood, SD.
