Obituary

Kellye Lee Haughian Thompson 56, of Spearfish, SD passed away on May 6, 2025 after a courageous seven year-long battle with ALS.

Kellye was born February 24, 1969, in Belle Fourche, SD to Alexander "Nander" and Mattie (Hamill) Haughian. Born during a blizzard, her folks had to drive to the closest hospital some 80 miles away from their home in Hammond MT. Kellye joined her three older sisters to be the baby of the family or the bonus baby as she liked to tell her sisters.

The family moved to Colstrip, MT when she was three and she attended school in Colstrip until the end of her sophomore year after her parents sold their businesses and moved to Custer, SD. She went to her Jr. year of high school in Custer, she then returned to Colstrip to finish her schooling while living with her older sister Mary and her husband Mike who treated her as their own from, doing homework, senior pictures, camping trips, vacations or playing Spinner Rabbit with Mike. Kellye was a cheerleader during her high school years. She was always very proud to have cheered on the Colts and Fillies and the Wildcats while in Custer. She always said these were some of her best high school memories. In Colstrip she was your typical small-town teen. She spent her time cruising with friends, cheering on CHS at various sporting events, playing softball, getting into just enough trouble to make it interesting. In Custer she worked with Mom Mattie and sisters Cynde and Bobbi at the Chief Cafe during the summer. The majority of her friends worked there as well so work was always fun. While in Custer she fell in love with the Black Hills. She spent time going to the lake, driving through the Needles Highway or Custer State Park and cheering on the Wildcats. On days off in the summer she would spend time with her Dad taking drives on all the backroads around the area where she would try to get him lost. He would always wonder how she knew all of them. It certainly wasn't because she doing things she shouldn't have been doing.

After graduation she attended Black Hills State University in Spearfish. Kellye chose it because it was fairly close to Colstrip and her parents in Custer. While attending college she met the love of her life Devan Thompson at the year-end football party. Devan was a Wide Receiver on the football team and the rest is history. They married shortly after Devan graduated from college. Son Devan Joseph Michael was born in 1989 and daughter Darian NiKole joined the family in 1993. All Kellye ever really wanted to be was a Mom or a professional cheerleader(haha). She adored both of her kids, bonus son Nick Davis and being Devan's wife. Devan and Kellye travelled to several places together in the US. Washington DC, California, Oregon, Florida, Virginia Beach, San Antonio to name a few, with South Carolina being one of Kellye's favorite trips. She loved attending the kids' school activities and sporting events. Watching DJ and Darian run was her particular favorite. She was fiercely proud of all three kids. And then came the grandkids! Where Kellye really learned another level of love! They were the best thing in her life. She absolutely loved being Grammy to Trey, Asa and JoJo. Her very favorite days were spent with them. She enjoyed scrapbooking, crafts, growing flowers and she loved reading. Her absolute favorite days when her little house was full of chaos and lots of love with the Tribe called Thompson. She liked to cook and one of the hardest things for her to accept with the ALS was that it robbed her of her being able to show her love to her family by cooking big family dinners! Her niece Alex, best friends Amber,  Angie and family friend Devan made it possible for Kellye to go on her trip of a lifetime to Ireland where she was blessed to meet a lot of extended family, including her beloved "bonus Mum" her Dad's first cousin Gemma. They somehow remained close over the great distance between South Dakota and Ireland. It was definitely one of the best times in her life.

Kellye worked for Langer's Black Hills Silver for 12 years, where she became very close to the Langer Family. She was "adopted" as their 3rd daughter. When Langer's closed she went to work at Spearfish Eye Care Center, for Dr's Mike Richey and Kathy Haivala for 18 years before retiring due to the ALS. She absolutely loved both of these jobs and made some of her most special friendships.

Waiting to greet her are her parents Nander and Mattie Haughian; mother-in-law Lucy Jackson; sister Cynde Hodges and her husband Pat; sister Bobbi Haughian; father-in-law James Hugh Thompson; grandparents Daniel and Susan (Quinn) Haughian, Louie and Evelyn Hamill; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She is survived by her husband Devan; son DJ, Spearfish; daughter Darian and her husband Joe, Upton, WY; bonus son Nick Davis, Lake Tahoe, CA; grandchildren Trey David, Asa Devan and JoJo Azalene, Upton WY; sister and brother-in-law Mike and Mary Holzwarth, Big Fork, MT; sister-in-law Nikki Willis and her husband Hank their children McKenna and Ephraim Creve Coer, IL; niece Alex Dwinal and her husband Josh and their children Maddie and Bennett, Bend OR; niece Autumn Stout and her husband Shane and their children Declan and Finley, Manassas VA; nephew Scott Hodges and his wife Katie and children Kash, Timber and Bodie, Clatskanie OR; Sammie Holzwarth and her partner Andrew and their daughter Riley, Bozeman MT; best friend Amber (Gary) Ramsey, Colstrip MT; special friends Angie (Kevin) Julian, Painted Post NY,  Leanne Crippen, Billings, MT, Ginny Haines, Seeley Lake, MT, Joe and Janice Guttierez, Sturgis, SD, Autum and Michael Johnson, Spearfish, Joe and Kalaua Hamm, Aurora CO, Dave and Carol Perrett, Parker CO; special bonus Mum Gemma Doran and her husband Kieran of Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland and numerous cousins and friends.

Kellye would like to thank everyone who sent prayers, positive vibes or good thoughts to her during her battle with ALS. It meant so very much to her. One of her biggest fears was being forgotten and you never let that happen. Thank you to the most special friends a girl could ever ask for, especially Lisa Medved, Kim DeNeui, Carla DeLeon, Donna Page, Melody Hanzlik, Mike and Lorna Richey, Kathy Haivala and Sheri Kloeckl.

If you knew her you know she loved her flowers. So included in your program there are some bachelor button (cone flowers) seeds for you to plant in memory of Kellye as it is the official ALS flower.
