Kay (Milberg) Kaul was born on March 1, 1936, in Newell, South Dakota, to Ralph and Charlotte Milberg. She grew up on the family sheep farm along Horse Creek, where she spent her childhood surrounded by family and the rhythms of farm life.
Kay attended Milberg School and later graduated from Newell High School in 1954. Kay continued her education at Black Hills State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She later returned to BHSU to earn her master’s degree in Elementary Education Administration.
Kay devoted much of her professional life to education, touching the lives of countless students, families, and fellow educators. She spent many years as a teacher before moving into school leadership, serving as a principal of East Elementary and Central Elementary Schools in Spearfish, SD. Her dedication to students, excellence in education and leadership were recognized in 1993 when she received the prestigious National Distinguished Principal Award, an honor that reflected her commitment to making a difference in the lives of children.
In 1999, Kay married Dave Kaul, and together they shared a love of dancing, traveling, and adventure. They explored the country in their RV, including a memorable trip to Alaska. For 20 years they escaped the South Dakota winters by heading south to Texas, eventually making Arizona their winter home. Whether dancing together, traveling the open road, or enjoying the sunshine, Kay and Dave shared many wonderful adventures and cherished memories.
Kay was also a talented quilter who enjoyed creating beautiful handmade quilts. Each quilt reflected her creativity, patience, and attention to detail. Her quilts will remain treasured reminders of the time, care and love she put into her work.
Kay is survived by her husband, Dave Kaul; her four children, Dee Rauth (Dick) of Alva, WY; Mike Burke (Susan) of Denver, CO; Jason Kaul (Stephanie) of Bismarck, ND and Jon Kaul of Greeley, CO.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dustin Burke (Bryce), Shelly Burke, Tyler Burke (Caron), Kaelyn Kaul (Kyle), Ashlyn Hukill (Garrett), Riley Kaul, Rachel Martinez (Marlon), Jennifer Marshall (Lawrence) along with her four great grandchildren.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Charlotte Milberg; her brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Eleanor Milberg; her former husband, Clifford “Bud” Burke, and her infant granddaughter, Grace Kaul.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Services will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, October 28, 2026 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
