Kathy Jean Rice, Lead, South Dakota

Kathy was born November 1, 1954 in Oakes, ND to Ephriam "Shorty" and Phyllis Zimbelman. She was raised on a farm outside of Fullerton, ND with her sisters Shirley (Brademeyer) and Rita (Kennedy). Kathy attended school at Fullerton, graduating Salutatorian of her class in 1972. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education at Valley City State University (ND) graduating with honors in 1976, completing her Math major in 1987. During her time at VCSU she met the love of her life, Steve. On June 28, 1975 they were married in Oakes. During the course of their 35 years of marriage Kathy and Steve were blessed with two sons, Eric and Dustin.

Kathy had a passion for learning which allowed her to touch the lives of many and develop long lasting relationships through teaching. Her career began in Carrington, ND (1976-1984). She was a long-term substitute in Grant-Deuel, SD (1990-1991). For the past 20 years she has been a high school Math teacher for the Lead-Deadwood School District. While there she also enjoyed being the FCA Huddle Leader.

Faith, family and friends have always been of utmost importance to Kathy. Her faith has been an inspiration to all that have known her. She loved following her boys' at their activities, traveling to see family and hosting Wednesday night bible study. Many of these memories have been captured in thousands of photographs that she has taken.

Kathy passed away December 25, 2010 at the age of 56 at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital after a Spirit-filled battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her father, Ephriam in 1981. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband: Steve; her sons: Eric (Jessica) of Sioux Falls, SD and Dustin (Heather) of Faith, SD; her mother: Phyllis Zimbelman of Oakes, ND; her sisters: Shirley (Jim) Brademeyer of Fullerton, ND and Rita (Tom) Kennedy of Dickinson, ND along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Her Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 11:00am (MDT) in Gym 1 at Lead-Deadwood High School. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 7:30 (MDT) at the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel.
