Obituary

Karl "Chuck" Anton Lustig, 78, died peacefully June 5, 2015, in his home in Spearfish, SD surrounded by the love of his friends and children, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.

He was born January 12th, 1937 in New York City, NY. As a child he lived in Waldwick, NJ with his parents, Anton and Kreszens, and his younger brother Rich. Even at a young age, he was quite the outdoorsman, spending his time fishing and exploring the woods near his home. In high school, he excelled at sports, lettering in football and basketball, the latter of which garnered him multiple college scholarship offers to Brown, Tufts and Columbia Universities. Graduating high school in 1955, he accepted an academic scholarship to Seton Hall. After completing his undergraduate degree, he was accepted at Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry. He interrupted his medical training to serve in the United States Air Force from 1964-1967, later returning to finish his radiology residency after an honorable discharge. Upon completion of his medical training, he practiced in several different states before finally settling in Spearfish, SD in 1992. Chuck was passionate about his work which he continued to do into his early 70s, saying it was much in part to the people he worked with and "thought the world of." While at Spearfish Regional Hospital, he was the regional radiologist and was involved with the Northern Hills Hospice program.

Known for his zeal for the outdoors, he loved to go fishing in his beloved Spearfish Creek, which he often described as "gangbusters," and was always eager to call his children to give them a fishing report. He enjoyed pheasant hunting, which often involved chasing his more-or-less trained hunting dogs. In addition to joining him on his hunting excursions, he also relished watching local sporting events and eating steak tips with his good friends.

Chuck was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church and often spoke of how much he enjoyed the friendship and communion he had with the congregation. In his final days, they were an important source of comfort to him.

A consummate family man, he raised seven loving children to which he imparted a strong work ethic, a love of the outdoors and airport anxiety. Chuck and his first wife, Linda Scott, together had two children, Rick Lustig of Port Angeles, WA, Lauren Lustig Johnson of Glendale, CA. Following his first marriage, he met Susan Howell. They married and had five children, Kurt Lustig of Seattle, WA, Dan Lustig of Gig Harbor, WA, Ben Lustig of Twin Falls, ID, David Lustig of Bozeman, MT, and Amy Lustig of Charleston, SC. He was a loving grandfather to eight grandsons and granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Rich and Muriel Lustig of Ringwood, NJ, and his wife June Lustig of Roanoke, VA.

A Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 14, 2015 at the Mountain View Baptist Church in Spearfish, SD with Pastor Bob Walther officiating. A reception at the church follows the service. Cremation and scattering of the ashes will be held in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to be donated to the Hospice of Northern Hills.

Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish. Online condolences may be written at www.fidler-isburgfuneralchapels.com
