It is with heavy hearts and also the utmost joy for having shared her life, we, the family of Karen Kaye Hofland, must say good bye to Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, and friend to so many. She passed from this life on Sunday, May 24, 2026 after having just returned home from a couple months spent in St. Martin’s Village for rehabilitation after a couple of difficult hospitalizations, and the realization that her health was declining. She passed in the arms of her daughter, Theresa Winch, who had taken her home that day. She left this life where she wanted to be, at home, where her beloved Brad had passed just over 4 years before.
Blessed to have shared her life are her children, Theresa and William Winch, Kim and Rob Hamlet, Lance and Susie Hofland, Lynn Hofland and his significant other Michelle Pierce, grand children Patrick and Kimberlee Brady, Tanner and Grace Hofland, Brooke Hofland, Bailey Hofland, Kristin and Mark Roan, Kevin and Jenna Grubbs; Great Grand Children Connor and Liam Brady, Ryan, McKay, and Kelton Roan; Carlee, Karis, Kennedy, and Ashley Grubbs; brothers and sisters in law Neal and Arland Hofland and families; Donna Olson and families, Ronnie Hofland and family, Bobbi McCoy and family, and many nieces, nephews, and best friends who shared her journey through this life.
She is proceeded into Heaven by her beloved Brad Hofland, her parents Marge and Benton Byers, sisters Margie Frandsen, Marilyn (Skeeter) Grosulak, brothers Bill and Tex Byers, sisters in law Bev Byers, and LaVonne Austad, brother-in-law Bob Frandsen, and many other family members and friends who met her at the Pearly Gates as she arrived that afternoon.
We would like to also express our heartfelt thanks to: Monument Health for taking such good care of her. St Martin’s Village where she had resided for about two months in her bid to get stronger, so she could return home. Piedmont EMS for their gentle care of her and her daughter after Karen passed from this life. Elk Creek Resort, who took on a recent widow, in failing health, and made her part of your family. She always loved you all and quitting was one of the hardest things she had ever done, but you will never be forgotten.
She will be laid to rest with her beloved Brad at Black Hills National Cemetery on, Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at 12:30pm. Please arrive at Black Hills National by 12:15pm for the service. There will be a short private family viewing at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel from 11:00am to 11:30am, before the burial at Black Hills National Cemetery.
