April 11, 1952 – June 19, 2025
Joseph (Joe) and his faithful companion, Daisy, will no longer be seen walking in Lead. On June 19, 2025, they both took their last pickup ride.
Joe was born April 11, 1952, in Deadwood, SD to Marie (Mayer) and Henry Schumacher.
Joe grew up in the Lead area. Attended St. Patrick Catholic School and graduated from Lead High School in 1971. He joined the Navy after graduation. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Meitorious Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and Good Conduct Award. He held the rank of E5 when he was discharged. Upon returning home he started work for Homestake Mining Company, he also joined the Lead-Deadwood National Guard.
June-1977 he was united in marriage to Julie Stoor. This marriage ended in divorce. In May-1985, he married Cindy (Rieb) Coker. They were blessed with two children, Jolene and Justin. Joe and Cindy lived in Lead, Deadwood, Spearfish, Sioux Falls and Madison, SD. They moved to Worland, WY, where he was student Aid in the Industrial Arts Program, also an EMS. Missing the Black Hills, he moved back to Lead, fishing, walking Daisy, having coffee, visiting with family and always putting others first.
He was very proud of a special granddaughter, who will always remember how Joe supported her and helped her with her senior year, his patience and encouragement when she joined the Army, he was her mentor and guiding light in her life.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Jolene; son, Justin; stepson, Marcus; stepdaughter, Sharon; seven grandchildren, three in-laws and two out-laws (you know who you are) nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Cindy; three brothers; four sisters and his faithful companion, Daisy.
Joe, Thank you for your service.
We will miss you; we love you. Rest in peace.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00am, Friday, September 5, 2025, at Black Hills National Cemetery.
