On February 25, 2016 Joseph Louis Langer was swiftly taken to serve at the right hand of the Father while surrounded by his family as he peacefully passed away.
Joe was born February 17, 1930 in Amidon, N.D. to Albert and Julia Langer and was the youngest of five children. He moved with his family to Spearfish Valley when he was seven years old. He attended school in Spearfish while he and his siblings helped their parents with chores around the homestead.
In 1951, Joe was drafted into the Korean War where he served an 18-month deployment as a staff sergeant which included 364 days on the frontline.
When he returned from his deployment he attended Black Hills Teacher College and worked at Homestake Sawmill west of Spearfish. In January of 1954, he met the love of his life, Ida Hildegard Massa while they were attending BHTC. The two married on October 21, 1954 and went on to have five children and spent 61 loving years together.
Joe had a strong sense of community and enjoyed investing in Spearfish's growth. The family owned and operated Spearfish Lumber and Laundromat while Joe built many houses in the Spearfish area. In 1969, Joe and Ida started Langer Sawmill between Spearfish and Belle Fourche where he employed numerous family members until he sold it in 2002 and retired to his hobby, Black Hills Alabaster. He and Ida then returned to Spearfish to be in the same town with all of their children and grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his wife, Ida; their five children, Mike Langer, Jeanne (Mike) Dower, Richard Langer, David (Rita) Langer and Colleen (Scot) Luhmann; countless grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; brother, Jim (Iona) Langer and many other family members and friends.
