He was stationed in the Pacific and took part in the retaking of the Philippines, and was with the first ground troops in Nagasaki after the atomic bomb.
After the war ended he worked as a pilot for Clyde Ice. Joe returned to the family farm to help his ailing father. After moving to Lower Valley in Spearfish, Joe continued his father's custom farming business for over forty years, and became known as "Tractor Joe". Joe enjoyed bowling, square dancing, horse shoes and was a self appointed Jeep tour guide for the Northern Black Hills. He enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge of the area with the Spearfish Historical Society. Joe was a member of VFW, a past Post Commander of the American Legion and a frequent volunteer at Fort Meade V.A. Medical Facility in Sturgis. He also volunteered as an actor at the Black Hills Passion Play, missing only a couple of performances in fifty years of service. He claimed to have portrayed every non-speaking part over the years.
