John Thomas Williams, 95 of Spearfish passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Fort Meade VA Medical Center in Sturgis, SD.
John Thomas Williams was born in Hyde County near Highmore, SD, on November 22, 1915, to Thomas and Clara (Jones) Williams. Heattended country grade school in Hyde County and Highmore High School where he played on the football team, graduating in 1934.
John served almost five years in the Pacific theater during World War II in Company A of the 6th Rangers, 98th Field Artillery Battalion. After being honorably discharged from the Army in November 1952, he returned to the Highmore area. He was a member of Local Union No. 1690 of theUnited Brothers of Carpenters.
On December 22, 1956, he married Florence Syring of St. Lawrence, SD. The family moved to Highmore in May 1957, where John continued as a partner in a local construction business. The couple relocated to Spearfish in May 1967, where John worked at Black Hills College until retiring in1980.
John was a member of the Rangers, the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid sportsman, hunting and fishing throughout the Black Hills area with best friend Barney Swartz.
He moved to the Hickory House in January 2006, and enjoyed the services of the Comfort Keepers. Later, in November 2010, he became a resident of Garden Hills Assisted Living.
He is survived by his two step-daughters, Judi Yost of McCook, NE, and Sally LaBau of Parker, CO; five step-grandchildren, nine step great-grandchildren; niece Linda (Williams) Super of Morgantown, WV; and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Florence, his parents, three sisters (Berniece, Margaret, and Vivian) two brothers (Wayne and Beuford) and a step-grandson.
Upon his wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Highmore.
