Obituary

John Neal Juso, 80, peacefully passed away on Friday, November 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 18, 1944, in Deadwood, SD, to Edwin and Viano Elizabeth Juso, John spent his childhood in Tarryville and graduated from Lead High School in 1962.

At 18 years old, John began his career with the Homestake Mining Company, where he proudly worked until its closure. Homestake picnics were a family affair.  John won quite a few hand-mucking competitions in his younger years.

At just 20 years old, he met the love of his life, Judy (Pack), and together they enjoyed a beautiful life, welcoming four cherished children: two sons and two daughters. In 2002, John and Judy decided to move to Byhalia, MS, to be closer to their grandchildren, creating lasting memories together. John shared a particularly special bond with his grandson, Chance. After spending about seven years in Tennessee, they returned home to the beautiful Black Hills, where John worked at the Silverado before enjoying his retirement in 2021.

John deeply loved his family and treasured the moments they spent together, whether camping, swimming, and boating at Sheridan Lake, or simply hanging out at home. He was well-liked by his neighbors, often teasing the neighborhood children that he had hooks in his garage to hang them if they were naughty. The children affectionately called him Uncle Johnny. He was known for his storytelling, often blending reality with humor—most of it being 1 percent true and 99 percent bullshit. John found joy in hobbies like fishing, hunting, motorcycle trips, and bowling. He made others laugh with his kind heart and infectious humor. He always had a smile on his face. He also enjoyed singing, playing keno slots, watching sports, and fixing almost anything with duct tape. John was known to turn off the TV if his Denver Broncos were losing, and as a fan of Michael Jordan, he cherished the opportunity to watch him play against the Denver Nuggets.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Judy Juso; his sons, John Juso and David (Lisa) Juso; his daughter, April (Kory) Iverson son-in-law, Scott Grasmick; grandsons Shay Christy, Dylan Juso, Isaac Iverson, Chance Grasmick, McKay Juso, and Maison Grasmick; and granddaughter Landyn Juso. He also leaves behind his sisters, Irene Rodrigue, Corrine Smith, and Eileen Craig, as well as numerous friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews.  Family friends, Pat and Toby Edstrom, Mellissa Spencer, and his bowling squad—Jimmy Dittus, Josh Dittus, and Tom Graveman—were also like family, each playing a special role in his life.

John was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Adrianne Grasmick, a brother Edwin Juso, and his parents, Edwin and Elizabeth Juso. He will be deeply missed, and his legacy of love and laughter will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
