Obituary

John P. Doran, 82 of Spearfish died peacefully at his home with his wife Lois by his side Saturday, December 05, 2009.

John Patrick Doran Jr. was born June 10, 1927, in Sturgis, South Dakota to John Patrick Doran Sr. and Celestine Kovarik Doran. He lived at Stoneville, SD until 1939 when his family moved to Sturgis. John attended school in Stoneville and Saint Martin's Academy in Sturgis. After graduating from Saint Martins, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving until his honorable discharge in 1946. He graduated from the University of South Dakota and joined the family businesses including Key City Lanes in Sturgis, Ole's Place in Deadwood and Otis Candy Company in Deadwood. He retired from Otis Candy Company as the "Candy Man." John married Theresa Meyer in 1956. To this union one son Chris was born. In 1980, he married Lois Smith Fitzgerald in Spearfish where the couple made their home and enjoyed life together until his death. John was active member of St. Joseph Parish in Spearfish and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing, fly fishing, gardening and wine making. He loved being with his children and grandchildren. Lois's and John's family and friends were a great source of comfort during John's final days.

John is survived by his wife Lois, one son, Col. Chris Doran, USAF, RET., St. Louis, MO, one grandson, John Patrick Doran III, Kingsville, TX, stepdaughter, Susan Fitzgerald, Spearfish, SD, stepsons; Tom (Diana) Fitzgerald, Hawthorne, NV, Jim (Annette) Fitzgerald, Hawthorne, NV, John (Yvette) Fitzgerald, Hot Springs, SD, Duane (Mary Ellen) Hoover, Thousand Oaks, CA and Gordon Hoover, ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are three sisters; Ramona (Walter) Saubers, Sturgis, SD, Mary (Thor) Sautter, Rapid City, SD and Isabel (Tom) Spaid, Palm Harbor, FL and two brothers, Ed (Linda) Doran, Broomfield, CO and Bill (Rosemarie) Doran, Grants Pass, OR.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife.

Visitation will be from 2-6 P.M., Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Vigil services will be held at 7:30 P.M., on Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Tim Hoag as Celebrant. Burial with military honors will take place at 1:30 P.M. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to benefit Hospice of the Northern Hills.
