Joan (Beyer) Hauck, 76 of Spearfish died, Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.
Joan was born on September 6, 1936 in Richardton, ND to Adam "Oddie" and Marjoie (Koesel) Beyer. She attended grade school in Richardton and graduated from Taylor High School in 1954. She played saxophone in the THS Band and belonged to various school clubs. She married Richard Hauck in 1954 and they lived in Dickinson, ND while her husband finished college at Dickinson State University.
Joan served as a Girl Scout leader for several years. She was talented in sewing, crafts, decorative wood design cut and painted by Joan, oil and acrylic painting, plus quilting and traveling, once Rich got her in the car!! Many of the crafts Joan worked on were given to friends as gifts and /or sold to people in the Wahpeton and Fargo area.
Joan worked at Bob's Fairway, Gibsons (Pamida) plus 20 years at Meritcare Clinic (now Sanford Clinic) as a receptionist, five of those years as the switchboard operator and medical records. In 1983 she received the Wahpeton Warm Welcome Award of which she was very proud.
"The No Nonsense Caretaker!" was a book Joan received from her granddaughter Katie and her friend Jason, so she could record some of her crazy comments! When Joan and Rich were in a Sioux Falls motel for breakfast she accidentally put Gravy Mix with Sausage in the waffle iron—did she get laughs! She had many crazy comments with patients while she worked at the Meritcare Clinic in Wahpeton. One time a patient asked her where to pay a bill, Joan sent the patient across the street to another building (many of these comments were the result of being too busy). She was great with people, her come back comments were terrific in drawing many laughs! (As her husband—I can truthfully say once she got going it was difficult to beat her in "off the cuff" comments). The clinic was never the same once she retired. Joan was great with people, especially older ones. She loved people and was very good in assisting them in time of need.
She is survived by her husband Rich; her two daughters, Susan (Greg) Wallace, Fargo, ND and Lori (Doug) Bishop, Ashland, MT; six grandchildren, Sarah Wallace (Luis) Fernandez, Winnemucca, NV, Adam (Samantha) Wallace, Lincoln, ND, Sam (Ashley) Bishop, Custer, SD, Jake (Karla) Bishop, Billings, MT, Katie Bishop, Denver, CO, Megan Bishop (Tyler Furry), Whitefish, MT; brothers, Roger (Luanne) Beyer, Wilken, MT, Jack Beyer, Dickinson, ND and Jim (Mary) Beyer, Richardton, ND; seven great-grandchildren, Hailey and Zachery Fernandez, Noah and Nash Bishop, Parker Wallace, Mya Bishop and Tatus Furry. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Tom Beyer.
